Waiting until check-in will be cheaper (long-hauls recently went up, but I think short-hauls are the same), but you risk F being full, or someone beating you to it.
You could keep an eye on your flight's seat map and if F starts filling, upgrade before check-in. It's pretty risky, but could save you some $$$ if it is still (close to) empty on the day of departure.
Maybe also check loads for the day of the week you're flight is.. perhaps your flight typically has a low load factor. What day are you flying?
