No need, UA short-haul awards are 10K o/w. You could also use Avios on AA (routing via PHX) if you'd rather connect than have to drive from LAX or pay for UA or WN. As bayhouse noted, VX to SNA was nice while it lasted, but apparently not profitable.

They tried SFO-SNA back in 2009/2010 and dropped it after a year.
