Help--worst itinerary ever

So--I recently grabbed some Delta tickets for $350-ish, from Portland, Oregon to Cartagena, Colombia, on December 19th. I couldn't turn down that price, but my flight starts out with a red-eye to MSP, followed by a SEVEN-HOUR-LAYOVER. After an absolutely awful night, I fly to Atlanta, and I have only FORTY MINUTES to make the Domestic to International connection, and fly to Cartagena--that is, assuming everything arrives on time, which, given Minnesota's reputation for snowy weather, I'm not confident about happening. So, is this even a physically possible connection--can I make this? If not, I don't know what I'll do, because ATL-CTG is a flight only offered one a day. Is it possible for Delta to give me a nicer itinerary..for instance the 11:55 pm 7:20 am nonstop PDX-ATL, followed by the 10:45 am ATL-CTG. I really don't want to pay extra, seeing as how the prices have more than doubled. I reaally need advice, and any help would be appreciated!!!

You should check out this thread about connections in ATL. But I would be really nervous with only 45min.

Well, is there an alternate, earlier middle flight (MSP-ATL) that would give you a shorter MSP layover and a longer ATL one? If I were you I'd pay any change fee to make that work. I would not have bought your original itinerary in the first place -- I think it's always poor practice to try a short connect to a once-daily longhaul. Even if you make it the stress isn't worth the few bucks you may have saved -- look, the flight is more than five months away and you're already paying a price in worry. Low fare isn't everything.
