Entering the US using a different passport

Hi all

I am a dual Thai/UK national. I have been travelling to the US using my Thai passport with my B1/B2 visa obtained in mid 2009. I then acquired a UK citizenship later the same year. I've never tried to enter the US on my UK passport as I didn't see the point applying and paying for an ESTA that would last only two years when my B1/B2 visa valids until September 2019.

My Thai passport is expiring in August and there is no easy way to apply for a new one without me either going back to Bangkok (no trip planned) or taking a day off work to travel down to London but that would take about 8 weeks.

Would there be any issues at immigration if I apply for ESTA and travel under VWP and my UK passport to the US from now on?

None at all (assuming you have not been up to any funny business over there!) The fact that you are a UK subject and are thus permitted to travel to the US under the VWP with a valid ESTA should give you no issues.

Tut, tut. OP is actually a British citizen. The term British Subject hasn't existed in any form since 1983 and in the most part hasn't existed since 1949. I seem to find that a lot of Americans get this wrong, but then they also think our food and dentistry are rooted in the 1950s as well......

No worries! I also have dual citizenship and previously entered the US on a b1/b2 visa as well. Went back in 2010 but at that time I used my other passport on the VWP and had no problem. Nobody asked any question, having multiple citizenship is quite normal nowadays so there should be no problem.

As others have stated you're doing nothing improper and as long as your ESTA is approved you shouldn't experience any problems. If it were me I'd go down to London early and do the Thai passport during the day and then fly to the US (if appointments are available) just to get that out of the way.

What do you mean by "do the Thai passport?"

I think I will hold it off for now until the next time I go to Thailand. Only because I normally fly out of LCY on BA1/BA3 and the Thai Embassy is on the other side of town.

Should really have got it sorted before I moved out of London but didn't realise how fast time went by!

I meant go to the Embassy to renew the passport as the OP will have to go to London anyways. But as OP will be flying out of LCY it's not a convenient detour.
