throwaway ok?

If want to book flight from somewhere to PHL but it's cheaper to book somewhere to XYZ via PHL, can I skip the PHL-XYZ leg if it's booked one-way no luggage? (I read that checked luggage will go to the end no matter what.) Is this legal if one lets an agent know at the PHL airport? thanks

Legal - no, most airlines have policies against this so don't tell the agent at the connecting point what you're doing (though many will understand and wave you farewell, all it takes is one to report you).

Doable - yes, people do sometimes "miss" their connecting flight when the connecting point is their home airport.
