@USAirways so you bump folks out of first class seats to DC when you have govt officials who need last-min first class tickets? #really
@USAirways so if government officials want last-min first class paid for by taxpayers you bump your existing customers? #lastflightonusair
@USAirways just saying -- folks should know before flying your airline you give preference to govt officials over loyal customers

US Air Bumps FOX Chief WH Correspondent for "Government Official"?

I was checking out my Twitter feed today and came across some really interesting tweets from Ed Henry, the Chief WH Correspondent for FOX News. He claims that he was bumped out of First Class & replaced by a "government official. As you follow along his tweets, it seems that the gate agent CONFIRMED that this happens "all the time".

Both American & US Air have been using their Twitter accounts to try & respond - but it's clear they're not pleased with the public discussion of what seems to be a pretty strange policy...

Ed Henry's Tweets can be seen here:

American's Official Response to me, when I expressed concern:

Last time I was bumped out of first class for a "government official" it was for an air marshal.

A Federal "Government official" on government business should not fly FC. In fact, under the JTR, it is only possible with all kinds of exceptions. My agency has a policy even to refuse a complimentary upgrade if it might appear that I am travelling FC on the nation's dime. If it were a FAM, don't they like a few rows back to get a better view of situations? I was bumped once out of DCA for a former Congressman and current TV commentator, but I can understand airlines wanting to curry favor with Big Shots.

Wouldn't surprise me if this is the case in this instance.

If the person whining had a purchased 1st class ticket , then has grounds to be annoyed if downgraded based on reason provided.

If this person was just upgraded and reason is as given, then seems very sensible decision by airline

YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT AIRLINES DO FOR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS. Long before airlines created special top tier elite status like concierge key etc. American has had a special private back line phone number for Senators and Congressman that goes to a special desk. Do Congressman and Senators get special treatment? YES. Pan Am did stuff that I will not put in print except when we lost Pan Am the USA lost a intelligence asset.
