Update 08APR2014: Star Alliance Awards must have been booked by March 30, 2014. They are no longer available through US. This thread is mostly useful for historic purposes, and discussing issues such as schedule changes/route changes that affect FTers existing *A awards booked before 3/31/2014.

Discussion on using US miles to book oneworld awards is available here.

If you are looking for discussion on US's new partner awards that use various partners not in oneworld (many of whom are former *A partners), see the devoted thread on using US miles to book NON-oneworld partners here.

------------------------

Update 07JAN14: American Airlines award tickets bookable online on usairways.com or through reservation.

  • Award travel must be wholly on American Airlines or a combination of American Airlines and US Airways.
  • American Airlines awards cannot be combined with any of our current partner.
  • American Airlines award travel chart (PDF)

Please see the devoted thread on using US miles to book AA here.

Good find, so in theory, we can use DM to fly * Alliance carriers until March 30, 2015 (assuming we made an award reservation on March 30, 2014).

It's closer to 11 months out right? You can only currently book out until early nov right now, no?

thanks for the tip, tried that but whatever I enter from NRT to PVG on 6-9.2 it says no search results. I do not think this is true as I am able to see flights on aeroplan engine, but just with crazy long layovers. Any other options to look for this?

There are no Award Seats available on the non-stop flights on those dates, but there are a few connecting options in C on the 6th:

Thanks again for the help, now the next problem...

It seems from PVG to KIX there is no direct option in C, so I would like to book this one in Y.

Now for the return option, unfortunately I am not able to see which of below flights are available for award space?

Is the

FS/ CS- YS-

the indicator for availablity, so if it says CS+ it means seats are available?

Thanks again!

In this case it means there is at least 1 seat business award seat available...as the search was for one seat only.

I'm hoping to book a ROR-WLG/MEL-ROR award in business class for 30k miles and have most of the segments on hold. However, despite the UA site showing availability in economy and business, the (very helpful) agent I spoke to simply couldn't pull it in for the final leg GUM-ROR. I searched for ROR in this thread and a few others seemed to have an issue with GUM-ROR a year or so ago. Is there anything I can say to the next agent so they can find this flight? There is nothing else showing with availability either MNL-ROR or ICN-ROR around the dates I need, so it's GUM or bust.

I am ecstatic. Finally US will leave *A and we no longer have to endure all those folks that buy cheapo miles with DM and scoop up the award space in premium cabins of other *A airlines .... Have fun with AA.....

NH 919 NRT 09:40 -3 PVG 12:10 -3 788 0 FS/ CS+ YS-

You could so long as you are aware that that flight is on 3rd Feb which doesn't meet your original requirement of 6-9 Feb.

Do they just fire all the agents? Cause if they don't ............ what will they do? There's absolutely no way they will have been trained to use the new system by then.
Sadly, they'll probably re-train them.... er, I mean train them. And another chapter of the Good Ole Days will close.
