Using the miles upgrade function under "search flights"

When choosing to upgrade from M/H class, it says that "upgrade eligible" does not guarantee availability. So, what's the easiest way to assure the upgrade? Just book it with an agent over the phone or call right before you book online and confirm that there is actually availability?

Searching online (using a Standard Award search in Expert Mode) shows inventory, but there are many reports of both false positives and false negatives. The phone is definitely the best way to see if there's inventory.

Yes, while you can see upgradeability online (NF/NC) but to be certain it is best to do with a phone agent.
Booking on the phone will cost $$$ so if you see upgrade availability online and book "free" online but call and it is not available -- use the 24 hour cancel for free.
Another approach is to set up the booking online, pause just before booking and call to check availability. Hold off booking until the agent confirms availability.
