Air NZ Airpoints uses Airpoints Dollars instead of RDM and Status Points instead of EQM.

The value is completely different so 80 airpoints dollars might be equivalent of 4000 miles, depending on how you use them.

Maybe thats one way to keep the pax from moving from them, as competition is intense, especially for these days

Is it correct that Tasman Smart Saver Fares don't accrue any UA EQM/RDMs?

Correct.

"No accrual of Airpoints Dollars or any frequent flier points or miles with airline partners".

Yes. These book into one of LGSKP (usually not P unless there is some amazing sale on). Unlike the longhaul flights which earn both airpoints dollars and status points, tasman smart savers earn status points only (no airpoints dollars).

That's why I always fly Qantas, or even better, LAN, across the Tasman.

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot!

I know it's shocking to say this on FT (and I'm shocked myself ), but sometimes it's worth it. We're flying WLG-MEL for US$50 pp shortly on a NZ smart saver fare. The next cheapest option was US$200 pp for our dates, so not worth the 1600 miles for us.

If you have UA*G status and no (or ruby) status on OW then the *G benefits (space+ seats, lounge, priority check in & boarding, express immigration & security in Australia, etc) likely exceed the value of 1300 odd miles each way on trans-tasman (assuming 100% earning).

As it happens I have status on both. Qantas is sometimes the same price, and sometimes higher than Air NZ. Rarely is Qantas fare lower. LAN is lower in business class but that isn't the issue here (business class fares earn EQMs even heavily discounted ones).

I just looked at flights in April. Air New Zealand is charging 1k, UA is charging 2k. How does UA's pricing make *ANY* sense?

What flight(s)? Maybe UA is sold out of the lower buckets?

Don't know if this link will work.

http://www.orbitz.com/App/ViewFlight...e=interstitial

I've looked at various dates, times April, May... Always seems to price out the same..

In fact United is the most expensive carrier (not including Cathay Pacific).

Well the OP is trying to get to AKL and UA doesn't fly there.. that could be part of the problem since there is a connecting flight on another airline involved.

Looking at some dates in April on ExpertFlyer, NZ's lowest published fare SFO-AKL (K class) is $598 round trip (does not include taxes). UA's lowest published fare is S class at $1,015.

NZ's lowest published fare that is eligible for earning miles (W) is $1,538.

Really? That is great - so you wait until the last moment, find a flight which is zeroed out in coach - i.e. Y0 - demand that flight and voila you travel NZ's luxurious Biz class .

Ex the UK, UA offers consolidator fares which are non earning ... which always horrifies me a tad .
