Combining Different Types of Upgrade Certs.

I am flying SFO-LAX-MIA and have some paper one segment confirmed upgrades. Can I use those of the LAX-MIA and then a 500 miler for SFO-LAX, and same for the return?

Thanks.

Sure. (If you booked online, you can request 500-mile upgrades for just the SFO-LAX segments through the web site.) Then call United Reservations to take care of the advance confirmable segments.

It shouldn't be a problem -- and the computer should handle this just fine -- but as posted many times before, agents do get confused and it would be worthwhile knowing your e-upgrade balance before the trip and then checking it afterward to note any discrepancies.

Per PremEx's advice in another thread, I have taken to confirming the # of e-upgrades before leaving the check-in counter. When all is done, simply ask the agent to confirm the number of e-upgrades in your account. I have found a couple of times that when doing this (after having upgraded with a combination of paper and e-upgrades) that the agent had indeed taken too many e-upgrades. But then it was easily fixed on the spot.

Well I tried it on the out-bound:

Agent:

How will you support your upgrade?

Me:

I'd like to use one 500 miler for SFO-LAX and then this confirmed segment upgrade for MIA-LAX

Agent:

You can't combine to different kinds of upgrades.

Me:

Okay, then I will just use this one-segment confirmed all the way from SFO-MIA.

Agent:

Okay.

Return flight today.

Check in at MIA-

Agent:

Would you like me to pull from your e-upgrades?

Me:

No I would like to use this paper one (anoter one-segment).

Agent:

Good for you - so many people leave this at home all the time and let them expire. Uses it all the way for MIA-LAX-SFO.

By the way first time (on return) on the 777 with the 10 seats in F, it makes row 8 of the Business Cabin nicer, since the divider wall is straight across as opposed to being

--- ___ --- (hope this drawing makes sense).
