Lost points

Apols in advance if this should have gone into a subcategory, but i couldn't locate anything appropriate.

I have 20000 or so points on UA (earned about 3 yrs ago on flights) which I have lost due to inactivity. They expired Feb 08. I can see them as 'Lifetime United Miles' but cannot get to them.

My q is: is there any workaround to retrieving them. I had not realised that points expire after time of non-use.

thanks Geri

You could have reinstated the miles (for a fee) but that seems to only work within 12 months after they expire. Seems you are out of luck.

The lifetime mileage counter does not expire, and will not reset. Those, however, cannot be redeemed.

By the way, it would have cost you $275 to reinstate the miles, so maybe you wouldn't have done so even if you could.

Not true. From http://faq.ua2go.com/article.aspx?article=1322&p=1:
Expired miles may be bought back for 1.25 cents per mile, plus a $25 processing fee. Please call the Mileage Plus Service Center at 1-800-421-4655, 7 a.m. to 12 a.m. CT.

From the reinstate miles page: http://www.ualmiles.com/ReinstatementMiles.jsp

Purchase up to the total amount that had expired (only miles expired in the last 12 months are eligible)

Yet another contradiction on united.com. The FAQ says no limit, the form says yes.

No limit is mentioned. It does not specifically say there is no limit.
