Fare Code Help
As a UA newbie here, I am trying to figure out different fare codes.
What is the fare code for mileage upgrades to first class? for coach award tickets?
I am being told that there are no FC seats available trying to use a mileage upgrade to first for my upcoming flight yet ITN shows me that there are seats in F, A, and Y. I am utterly confused.
Thanks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

UA's award seat inventory comes from a nonpublished inventory, called XF/XC/XY (and NY for 1K extra economy inventory). This is substantially different from almost any other carrier. If A (for F) and D (for C) inventory exists, the odds are greater that you can get an X seat.
UA upgrade inventory is NF and NC, again unpublished and again, greater odds if there is A/D inventory.
International fares must NOT be q/v/w to get an upgrade (except 1k systemwides) and Y/B counts as "full fare" for reduced mileage upgrades. Sometimes, on certain routings, the B fare isn't much higher than the cheapest, other times, its 4x as much.

chexfan,
F: full fare First Class
A: discounted fare First Class
Y: full fare Economy Class
One hint; search UA board for 'fare code' and search on 'All Dates', as I believe this has been covered long time ago.
Hope it helps!
Thx

The Actual inventories are O for first, I for business and X for economy, but these generally only show up on old style ticket stock.
As Eastbay says, a good (but not always reliable) indicator is the availability of reduced fare inventory. The more A and D that's floating around, the more likely that there will be upgrade or redemption seats around.
