Could stupid pricing on domestic C be part of the problem?

One of the things that has always irritated me the most is that any QUP fares are not availalbe for booking on 3-class planes (I understand that PS should be exempt). But many times in the past I've been fly from SFO to somewhere on the East Coast that required a connection in ORD. Often the best flight choice was on a 3 cabin from SFO to ORD, which meant I couldn't buy a QUP fare, so instead I bought cheap Y and upgraded. So from me anyway, UA lost money on the three cabin planes.

I don't understand this? They've said in the memo that they're still going to feed you. Doesn't that count?

Of course not.

However, they will be seated in F dining on a nice hot meal looking back at us paying customers dealing with the BOB. Be sure to wave...

Once again, pathetic. :td:

Bad move by UA for sure. For vegetarians like me, BOB was hardly ever an option. So I guess we will be forced to brown-bag it if we fly UA.

I am in the same boat, er..I mean plane, as you. BOB is not an option for a lot of people, even if it is free.

but then...3 of my last 4 international legs in C did not have my "special" meal boarded even though a CSR and the check in agents all confirmed the request.

Hopefully, we'll start seeing a minimum of passengers as well.

Maybe, then, UA would realize the disgusting ramifications of its self-congratulatory idiocy. Passengers would have some dignity, as well.

Well I've just taken my last TATL flight on United. Paying for BOB across the pond - I simply can't believe they will survive too much longer.

How is this different from the current system with liquor? It's the same liquor, just free up front and paid for in the back.

Almost 300 posts in the space of a few hours - who woulda thought?

I could care less about any of this. The amount of legroom/personal space I can get onboard a plane is what determines which airline I fly, not what kind of food they serve me. As long as UA has E+ I'll keep being loyal to them. If they get rid of E+, then I guess I'll pick lowest fare.

What about those customers who bought an economy ticket expecting full (ie normal) service? I notice the website now says "we offer complimentary meals on most flights between the US and Europe" but there must have been customers who bought before that was changed.

As a lawyer - that's exactly what I was thinking. Forget about contacting the FTC, my advice is if this is true call your state attorney general. They will bank the cr*p out of UA, take a few hundred million dollars from them as a "voluntary" contribution, and get you your refund. Look what Cuomo did to the banks on the ARS/ARPS. The other think UA's 18 year old consultants didn't think of is the legislative fallout.

Honestly if this is true - it's all over - everyone will just be flying the cheapest airline or they will decide to pay more for decent service. Continental has the right strategy, why does UA think they can be just like US and keep the same high rev PAX.

I don't see how it's any different than the way it's always been for booze.

It's just airline food. I can't see quitting UA over this. I care much more about things like redemption amounts going up(other carriers currently doing this) and elite bonuses going away(US). Sure, we all have our own lines, and for many I guess this crossed it. But as another FTer so eloquently put it, gate gourmet is gate gourmet is gate gourmet.(except when it's skychef :D)

Agreed. It's annoying not to get a hot meal in domestic C (even if the cold meal turns out to be free), but it doesn't make-or-break UA for me.

Reasonable point. I bet if you complained enough they would give you a credit or something. PAX did have an expectation when they booked ticket.

Sell it as 2-cabin just like AA does on their 3-cabin configurations. Take no upgrades and let elites sit there on a first-come/first served basis. Standard Y service - no free food or booze - only a much better seat. Fine with me. Any upgrade would be to the F cabin.

Isn't that a possible scenario based on the memo?

UA could certainly sell it as a 2 cabin plane and only allow elites to sit in C who booked coach fares. It would actually be better than AA because anyone sitting in C seats would get the BOB meals for free ad free drinks. On AA elites sitting in C seats receive coch service only. There's no extra perks. If you upgrade, you'd upgrade to F. There'd be no NC inventory, just NF. Folks that purchased C tickets would get F seats, just like they do now on 2-cabin planes. Current upgrades from coach to NC would be switched to NF.

Let's face it, there's almost zero distinction between C and F service domestically, and I'm sure on full flights the agents do a ton of op-up's as it is. I'd rather see paying customers in the F seats, and NRSA's/employees in C. The paying customers are ALREADY sitting in C while employees enjoy F on so many of these routes as it is.

It is NOT a Co-Pay, It's a FEE

Remember, they're NOT copays, they're FEES; they are cash payments for customers to be able to use the "awards" they've earned. They are CHARGES/FEES in excess of the "awards."

I am beyond angry about this. I would drop UA tomorrow if a better option existed out of my home-town airport. But, what are my other options? The only other airlines that fly into my local airport are DL, and F9. I would switch to DL, but DL only flies in about 1/2 the year, and then with only 1 or 2 flights per day. F9 has greater, and year-round frequency, but I really don't see the advantage in flying with them over UA. Yes, F9 might have marginally better service, and DirecTv, but United has E+, even into this small airport via exPlus. United allows me to redeem my miles world-wide, especially to Hawaii, which is a great selling point for me, and of course, (sometimes/rarely) Channel 9.

HELP! I want to convey my anger to UA about this, but I really don't have any alternatives.

iwillflytheworld Aug 19, 2008 6:56 pm

What is the best place to e-mail/write to tell United that I will never buy a ticket on them anymore because of this, and attach tickets bought on the competition as a result of this most disgraceful move?
