Seriously, I wished I had a camera with me, but I didn't.

Cheers.

Welcome to FT mrio!

I still remember my first trip with my father on United ( F class on a DC-8) and being shown the "how to" of the buttonhole napkin. I agree that I'm glad they are back.
Way back when, I believe LH (and maybe other foreign carriers) used to give silver chains with clips on either end to use with their napkins [I believe this was a 'gift' in C and F class]. Since 9/11, I've been afraid to take one of these through security since they might declare it a "marshall arts weapon" to strangle the crew. Anyone else ever get these napkin holders?

Clothes Pins and Hairy Lemons

I went into the old archives and found a photo from 2003 to illustrate those clothes pins. Now I want those little salt and pepper shakers in the metal holder.

On a bit of a tangent, while looking for a photo online, I found a very interesting book chapter, SAS Drinks on Wheels on Wings that references those clothes pins.

He uses the tiny red plastic clothes-pin provided to attach his napkin to the lapel of his shirt and digs in. The eggs are runny, the champagne lukewarm. Luxurious problems. Mosquitoes in paradise.

It soon veers off into hash smuggling and James Joyce references, but the descriptions of the inflight experence in business class from Dublin to Copenhagen are spot-on.

Return of button holes?

Please excuse me in advance, I can hardly contain myself... :p

Today, on my first trip of the year, on flight 44 OGG-LAX, I observed that the linens that were put down as "tablecloths" had stitched button holes (at least mine did). My "napkin" did not, and before I observed that my tablecloth did, I had cut a hole in my napkin, per previous UA FA instructions.

When I saw the condition of my 'tablecloth', I immediately switched it with my "napkin". Joy, oh Joy.^

This is IMHO, the biggest change in on-board conditions since last March, when first I noticed the re-introduction of metal knives... I mentioned it to the purser; she had not noticed it before. Have any other FT'ers noticed this development?

It had been mentioned to me years ago that the button hole had "survived the Great Depression". That it went away during the recent "troubles" was difficult for me. I am happy to see its return!:)

You got scooped by about a month. :)

Buttonholes are back!

mauiUAflyer Jan 16, 2008 12:59 am

Well, it was about 1 month ago that I last flew (OGG-SFO-OGG). Didn't notice any change at that time, but I'm sure glad that they are back!!!

They must have snuck them in when I wasn't looking! A'ole pilikia!

Before this is closed, I have to jump in and agree that this is fantastic. I purposefully wore a button down shirt on my last flight to avail myself of the buttonholes. Simple, low cost, but highly valued. Thank you, UA.

While this may be old news here on FT, it obviously isn't old news to the UA FA out on the long-haul flights (forgive me if I include HI-west coast as "long haul"). The linen put down on my "table" had the stitched button hole in it, but the linen given to me for my "napkin" did not. The return of the button hole has come with very little fanfare! Not even the staff is clued in!

But I'm glad anyway! Thank you UA!^

Really?

A UA FA instructed you to make your own buttonhole? Now there's an unusual degree of empowerment and innovation. So what did you use to do it? The butter knife (and the whole rest of the flight)? I have a hard time imagining any implement that could make an effective hole in a linen napkin, but not a UA employee or passenger (and would thus be permitted onboard by TSA). Maybe I'm just not imaginative. :)

Anyway, welcome back buttonholes!

I keep the paper clip attached to the wires of my Bose headset, so it's always where I need it. I'll probably continue to keep the clip handy because many times I'm traveling in garments without buttons.

i like this idea, to make up for lack of buttonholes!!

I've had them on about 50% of my flights this year. They were present on domestic legs, but not on international ones.

No buttonholes on UA931 LHR-SFO yesterday. :(

Oh Boy... Now I can change my signature....

We've got Coke and the button holes back, now let's work on that catering contract to find Johnnie Walker.

No buttonholes yesterday on my flights SMF-ORD-IAD but we did have warm nuts and cookies.
