Aha, this explains where they were. Rather than opening the napkins up to take out the stainless knife, they just warehoused the whole mess and started over fresh. :D

Glad to see the holes back, if indeed they are.

A couple years ago I began to travel with a very small paper clip (the kind that you flip the wire handles back to squeeze open to hold about 30 sheets of paper) in order to attach the napkin to my shirt. I keep the paper clip attached to the wires of my Bose headset, so it's always where I need it. I'll probably continue to keep the clip handy because many times I'm traveling in garments without buttons.

This thread could be entered into the all-time FlyerTalk trivia contest. But in fact, it's not unimportant in a turbulent, unstable environment to have something absorbent positioned strategically, particular with red wine, coffee and chocolate syrup sloshing around.

On SAS in C meals the napkins come with a tiny red "clothes pin" that's perfect for clipping the napkin to one's garment. Very practical!

You're absolutely right. I bring my seat up and put away the footrest when I eat, in order to avoid spilling food down my chest. I choose not to eat meals in bed for the same reason.

Common sense does not mandate a buttonhole in your napkin. I manage quite well to keep canteen medals off my chest without buttonholes in my napkins at home or those provided in restaurants.

I now accept that non-buttonholed napkins are an issue for some passengers. But again, surely it shouldn't feature too far up the service / equipment improvement priority list? (Unless you happen to be Monk.)

Gawd.....someone is in an agrumentative mood today.

You yourself googled related phrases and found a surprisingly large number of frequent fliers determined this to be a highly prized feature.

It does not make anyone right or wrong. It's just that you are obviously in the minority. Is that causing your foul mood?

Of course it should - it's cheap to implement, so the bang for buck is high, so it should be reasonably far up the enhancement ladder.

Are you guys sure it was a buttonhole and not a conveniently sized rip in the napkin?

Hehe, I heard they were coming back before Pat reported it, so I highly doubt it was just a rip.:D

Yes, a proper button hole, although it was somewhat larger than the ones they had previously.

Yes I remember someone from the inside said a few months ago that they would be coming back with the next order of linens. So they should be showing up on other flights as well.

Well, strictly speaking, you don't know you're in the majority. Just because a lot of folks have posted about it on the web doesn't mean most C & F travelers actually care about it. Clearly there are quite a few on FT that do care, but you can't really infer anything from that.

Case in point - the term "furries" has more hits than "buttonhole". Make of that what you will ;).

Let's see if I can clear up some of the controversy on buttonholes:

--Buttonhole napkins are considered by some to be an upgrade. It's a nice touch. Meaning, their presence is seen as a positive, and their absence seen as evidence of deteriorating service levels overall.

--Buttonhole napkins are considered by some to be "no big deal." Meaning, thier presence doesn't offend, nor does their absence.

--It appears that NO ONE is "against" buttonhole napkins.

--Cost of buttonhole napkins vs. non-buttonholes is apparently negligible.

Therefore, I join the right side of this issue :D :D :D. Let us rejoice! Buttonhole napkins have returned!

(I am only sorry I didn't get them on my SYD flights over Thanksgiving week.)

I'm glad they are back as well, I've been using a very small plastic "clothespin" that I received on an El-Al flight.

Flew FC from PHL - SNN on US last week on one of the last ETOPS rated 757 built (wow what a beautiful aircraft) and I never even knew napkins like this existed. Nonetheless, I'm no slob -but that napkin totally saved me from some aggressive balsamic vinegar and salmon juice stains on my favorite Zegna shirt... or maybe I just had too many Chivas Regals heh.

Cheers.
