Is it the upper deck that makes the difference?

Thanks everyone. I'll stay where I'm at. Must be a light flight if the entire C class downstairs in vacant.

Everyone has their preferences.
I'm for 15G.
Have never had kids up there.
Also when initial takeoff problems occur, tend to get more details.
And for asia flights, upper is better (FA's).
Only drag is having my carry on hidden away somewhere;but I get by.

I prefer LD , boarding early , so Y passengers can look at you as they go back to the cattle car....and be jealous.

I usually travel LD. On the few (3-4) occasions I have been on the UD, I always face a problem with my rollaway which does not fit in the overhead or side bins.
Even when I am the first upstairs and the closet is nearly empty, excepting maybe 3 FA bags, the UD FA start telling me to put my bag downstairs (We have no space !). Of course, after about 60% of the UD pax put their bags in the closet, it does get full. But why tell everyone it's full to begin with ?
I have even seen FA's keep the curtains drawn to begin with (before any pax put their bags there), so that no one can see how empty it is.
For this reason alone, I travel LD.

This whole discussion is pretty entertaining. I haven't been to the upper deck for probably 15 years but we'll be flying up there soon with our 15 month old. Of course, he is usually better behaved than many of the other travelers we have seen in F (he doesn't use his cellphone after being repeatedly told to turn it off, nor does he get drunk and abuse the staff) and I expect he'll sleep through most of the flight.
Then again who knows maybe our upgrades will be clear and we'll all be spreading out in F.

And I thank you for this. It means I get a better chance at the UD.
In over 100 separate transpac flights UD 747 in the past 7 years, I have never once been told I cannot place my carryon in the closet. Never. I've heard it here before, so it must happen, but I've never seen it. Also never have seen an infant up there. Small kids once or twice, but they were quiet.

The UD closet has a placarded max weight limit of 200 lbs., which is not a lot.
Figure an average rollaboard weighs 30 lbs and all you can get is 6 bags in there before breaking the restriction.

Hi all,
Waaaaay off topic here (though I have had the pleasure of sitting in the upper deck on UA several times!), but I've started this thread over in the Travel&Dining section and thought some of you may like to add your comments there (just in case you don't often read that section). I see a lot of people in this thread travel to Hong Kong regularly and I'd love to hear from you!
Cheers,
Alan

After flying SFO-FRA in 12H last Sat., I've decided I don't like the UD. I'm just a bottom bunk guy.
Also, I prefer the 6:45 p.m. flight, 777, over the 747's 2:10. It just feels cozier and darker below.
