United Airlines Boosts Asia Pacific Service - Adding 40 More Flights a Week to Its Year-Round Schedule

United optimizes its network and places assets where they will provide the greatest benefits to United and its customers


CHICAGO, July 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- United Airlines (Nasdaq: UAUA - News) today announced that it is strengthening its service to the Asia Pacific region by adding 40 more weekly, year-round flights and additional cargo capacity to its schedule during the next nine months. This move solidifies United's position as the world's largest transpacific passenger carrier, placing United's assets where they will provide the greatest return for United and its customers while leveraging the company's strengths -- its customer base, hub airports and Asia Pacific network.
United's international network optimization plan will result in the following changes to its schedule:


-- launch of United's first-ever service between Asia Pacific (Tokyo) and
its Washington Dulles hub;
-- reinstatement of United's daily, nonstop San Francisco-Taipei service;
-- expansion of United's San Francisco-Seoul service from seasonal to year
round; and addition of three more weekly flights between San Francisco
and Hong Kong.

"By focusing on the strength of our hub network, United and our customers will benefit from our increased Asia Pacific service, including our first-ever Asia Pacific service from Washington Dulles," says John Tague, executive vice president and chief revenue officer. "As we improve our financial performance, we must make certain that we take full advantage of our network strength and fly routes that provide the best revenue opportunities for United and the greatest benefits to our customers."

United's new service between Washington Dulles and Tokyo Narita replaces its Tokyo service from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). From Washington Dulles, flyers can connect to 49 destinations via 137 flights on United and United Express. The new service, which will be on a Boeing 777, begins on Oct. 28, 2006, and includes the following schedule:

UA 803 IAD-NRT 12:20 p.m. 4:25 p.m. (next day) Daily
UA 804 NRT-IAD 4:55 p.m. 3:25 p.m. (same day) Daily

United's reinstatement of its service between San Francisco and Taipei,
which will be on a Boeing 747, begins on April 1, 2007, and includes the
following schedule:

UA 871 SFO-TPE 1:01 p.m. 5:20 p.m. (next day) Daily
UA 872 TPE-SFO 12:20 p.m. 8:24 a.m. (same day) Daily

The expansion of United's San Francisco-Seoul service from seasonal to year-round begins in October and United's increase of three additional weekly flights between San Francisco and Hong Kong begins on April 1, 2007.

New services will be available for sale next week and the year-round San Francisco-Seoul service is now available for sale.

Related to this schedule change, United will sell its New York-London route authority to Delta Air Lines subject to U.S. Department of Transportation approval and certain other closing conditions. Delta will use this route authority to fly between JFK and London's Gatwick Airport. This route authority sale will result in United discontinuing its JFK-London Heathrow service at the end of October.

United customers in New York will continue to have excellent access to United's strong international network. United provides 62 daily flights from the three New York City-area airports to United's international gateways in Washington D.C., Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles. In addition, United customers will continue to have access to more than 125 international connections from JFK through the Star Alliance network, including daily non-stop, codeshare flights to Narita on ANA.

Ok this is great - I just booked an award ticket to Europe with a JFK-LHR segment for December; I'm assuming I'll need to call MP and get that changed.

IAD-NRT - That rocks! I don't have to go through ORD or LAX anymore. Woohoo! Only dowsnide is it's a 777, I prefer the 744.

I'll miss the JFK-LHR flight - I'll have my swan song on that run at the end of August.

This annoys me to no end - I'm very loyal to UA, but having no direct option to LHR is going to cause me to think twice about my choice for that segment.

UA has really just given up on New York. And given up an LHR landing slot, I presume.

The IAD-NRT flight seems almost like a vengeance route -- to counter ANA's recent re-entry into ORD-NRT.

UA needs more widebody planes. If there were a few more planes on lease, I bet the JFK flights would have remained. I can understand redeploying equipment for higher-margin business, but NYC/NRT/LHR isn't exactly crap traffic.

Seriously, why bother to have anything at all at JFK? Remind me, why can't UA have nonstop transcons (i.e., p.s. flights) out of LGA?

And ANA will mop up UAs JFK-NRT customers quite nicely and pick up the slack, Unless they run to AA or JAL.

A little something called the LGA perimeter rule. No non-stop flights on weekdays from LGA to anywhere farther than 1,500 miles from the airport. DEN is a grandfathered exception.

It's a stupid, anti-competitive rule that ought to be repealed, but until it is, there's nothing UA can do.
