7 March 2005, ORD-FRA, $550 to upgrade Y to C. Stayed in E+. It was a very full flight; saw several folks @ the gate opting out of E+ to secure aisle/window seats in E-.

3/9 - received offer at Mr. Chicken at SFO for upgrade from C (paid Z) to F for 390.03. I declined...happy with 9B on the ps! ^

I heard a PA at a BOS gate this morning offering an upgrade from E- to E+ for $24. The agent said, "I have windows! I have aisles! I have emergency exit rows!"

How do you check out gate upgrades?

Are these paid/confirmed upgrades offered on flights when pax may also be on a waitlist to use MilPlus upgrades? i.e., is it possible that a paid upgrade is made avail to a non-status pax BEFORE a 1k/UGS using miles or a SWU has been cleared?

Seems steep as people are reporting $500 for U.S. - Asia routes. Didn't take it. A totally unscientific read-through of the data here suggests they're charging less for Y to C than for C to F. Personally I think Y to C is a better upgrade, but I guess United doesn't agree. |
3/4 PDX-LAX-IAD-ZRH: S fare, cancelled SWU request last month. Asked about flight load at check-in and was told for $650 I get to fly F to IAD and C to ZRH. Declined and end up with op-up to LAX and from IAD to ZRH. :D

In January 2005, Mr. Chicken offered me a Y-C upgrade IAD-LHR for $400. I do not recall my fare basis. That's the only paid upgrade opportunity that has ever come my way. Thought this might be an interesting historical data point.

K fare-SYD to LAX
Just flew to SYD on "K" fare. On way back was offered a upgrade to business for $550 for SYD-LAX leg. I declined, and it was mentioned that the economy and economy plus cabin was very empty and I should be able to sit whereever with no problems.
