If I flew once a year, and only spent $122 on a ticket, I would be very willing to spend the extra $39 for E+.
Like most things $mi$ek does, this is simply an attempt to make more money by swooping in on LCC customers at the expense of alienating elites.

And a T Fare is $122 with 10 days advanced purchase on that route, in that date range.

It's going to take a while before the combined fleet has adequate E+ availability (if it ever will). The new UA now has twice the demand for E+ but only fractionally more E+ (or equivalent) seats available than before the merger. If I were UA, I'd be looking to lower expectations quickly!
