cancelled flight that was partially booked with an e-cert : get that credit back?

I broke my leg last week and have consequently had to cancel a number of trips over the next few weeks. I was told by cust. service that I could send them a doc's note and they would waive/reduce the change fees, but at least one of those tickets was purchased partially with an e-cert. This means that the listed fare paid on the itinerary is " XXX - 400 " rather than "XXX". Is there any way that I can get them to credit that certificate in addition to the ticket fare?

Looking for suggestions as to who to call and what to say... surely I can't be the first person who's had to do this. ;-)

I has a trip purchased with an e-cert that I had to cancel. I called 1K line, and was able to use the balance of the purchase price (minus $150 change fee) on a later date, and get the e-cert back. I think its a fairly complicated process however as it took the agent 20 min or so.

Call UA res and if one agent won't do it, call back.

You can ask and on a medical cancellation you might get an understanding agent BUT the rules say no.

I had this once. The rule is "no" but a HI supervisor put it in the record to waive the change fee and give me the full value of the ticket for future use. This was a compromise. I only lost out $50 (ecert 200 but saved 150 change fee). It's stuff like that which keeps me loyal. Hope CO doesn't toy with the care shown elites (although from my few experiences on the CO elite line, I'm very scared!).
