Miles + copay upgrade didn't go through, vs free UDU?

I am in same boat for a Weds
IAD-ORD-NRT-BKK. $500 plus 25,000 on a K fare. Cleared the IAD ORD and the NRT BKK but all I really want is the ORD NRT which has not cleared. Should I call? Upgrades both ways cost $1000 plus 25,000 miles each way. Upgradable fare for SWU is about $2200. I am paying under $1200 plus the upgrade if it goes thru. I will turn it down if they don't give me ORD-NRT.
