Using E-Cert on United's Website

Hi all, I searched and am apparently not using the right words. Please deflect if neccessary.

So, im on .bomb right now trying to use a $200 E-Cert I was comp'd earlier this year. Using flexible dates for where I need to go, i am seeing a fare of $84 in the 5x5 matrix. Yet, when I choose that date the lowest fare I can choose is coming up at $161.

Whats the deal?

1. Most likely the $84 has code share with other airlines including CO, which is not allowed on a e-cert

use specific dates to see which flights your e-cert is valid for

Awesome, thanks for that. Would make sense.

Okay, so another question.

Looking at the $161.00 flight its $203.40 and looking at a $185.00 flight and its $206.40. WT? Looking at the tax breakdown just doesn't make sense. Will be going the $185 for sure. But is that a glitch?

Interesting learning experience tonight for sure......

Thanks for the help.

Perhaps you are confusing pre-tax fare totals with pos-tax fare totals?

The ecert is only valid on fares that over the cert amount pre-tax, not post-tax.

So a fare might be $198 RT + tax = $258 RT total, including taxes, for example. You could use a $150 but not a $200 ecert on the $198 fare.

Nope. Thought the same thing and triple checked and I am indeed looking at out the door pricing. Very strange. Is is possibly because the $161 flight has 2 stops and thus possibly requiring more landing type fees? The $185 fare is direct both ways.

Just looked at a $195 flight with 3 stops and out the door price is $250 with taxes. Huge variance there.

Its just very strange.

Some fares have date specific surcharges. Some fares have % based surcharges for travel very far out, past a certain date. Many fares have no surcharge for most dates.

I have found an ecert will not cover the surcharge amount - when there is an applicable surcharge. Took me a while to figure this out but if you examine the fare rules reading the surcharge section and compare how a cert works on surcharge dates versus non-surcharge dates you can see this in play.

If your base fare is lower than the amount of the e-cert, you can call in and request web support to issue the ticket. They will be able to over ride this little error.

As far as the math not working out on the discount, if by any chance you're flying to Hawaii, there's a little tax on the amount of the certificate. So the discount is less than the full amount of the e-cert.

E-certs can now be used on CO codeshare.
