Booking Code conversion - new?

So lots of schedule changes recently. Getting flights sorted out. I've noticed in the past few weeks, anytime there's a schedule change, they go out of their way to convert the booking code to the original booked. Whereas before, if I was booked in say W and only Q was available, they'd just book into Q.

Is this a new procedure? Or just enforcing old procedure that was ignored in the past? It seems like a waste of time to get a supervisor on the line to do all the work when we end up on the same flight anyway. I could see if we got booked into full Y or B that it would make sense to convert it, but not sure why they care if we are booked into SWQV etc
