Upgrading with miles question...
I'm using miles in my account to upgrade my girlfriend from Y to C JFK-SFO-LAX then LAX-JFK. Call the 1K desk to request the upgrade, 1K CSR said 30,000 miles will be deducted from my account, but when I went to my local airport to authorize the use of my miles the local agent took out 45,000 miles! I thought SFO-LAX is consider a connection within a segment and only one mileage upgrade award is needed. Who is right?

Every time I've upgraded with miles it was done on a one-way basis. Should have only been 30,000 miles regargless of number of segments.
Also, if you girlfriend was on a Y fare, it should only be 8,000 each way instead of 15,000.

Is SFO a connection or a stopover?

I'm sure your girlfriend is a wonderful person, but it surely cannot be worth spending 15K miles to upgrade SFO-LAX!! (and in my opinion not for JFK-SFO/LAX either unless it's the 763).

15k miles covers one-way domestic including connections.
So as long as there's no stopover (>4 hrs domestic on the connection) then the total roundtrip is 45k miles.
A simple call should straighten this out.
My advice, however, is to place the call AFTER the trip. Wouldn't want a mileage redeposit to screw with the confirmed upgrade. (Just being overcautious...)

I'm sure gleff's "45k" is a typo. He meant 30k.

Thanks for everyone's input. I called the 1K desk and straighten everything out.
