Now this is pain- Pilot concessions.

I feel for anyone in this economic enviroment. I was talking to a associate in one of our Hawaii offices yesterday. A friend of his who I have met before is a co-pilot or number 2 on 747. Under the new concessions his new base will be LAX versus HNL and he is going to be re-trained on a Airbus. That hurts but us probably a sign of what we are all going to see more (Airbus) of in the future as flyers. FYI

Yes. We will see more Airbus aircraft on all routes.
Please understand and consider the fact that the Airbus is the newest of aircraft purchases and, therefore, still under warranty.

Which car would you drive thru Baghdad if you had to drive thru and had a choice of personal vehicle? Your new '04 Town Car or your first luxury car, the '77 Lincoln Continental?

The 1974 Lincolns go a long way. The 2004's are far more technical and quite problematic. I can have a gas guzzler and go on and on for another 100,000 miles or have a high-tech car in the shop under warranty repairs every month.

Isn't it the Airbuses that keep falling off the sky? There's a striking resemblance here...

I think the pilots have been very wise - they knew that a few years ago they got more than they ever could have dreamed, and now, they are faced with unemployment and no other reasonable domestic employer. They are far better off in a restructured UA - especially the top-end pilots. A 747/777 captain, unemployed, may only be able to get a job flying a CRJ for several years to come, elsewhere. The UA route network and fleet could in no way currently be absorbed by the US airlines. I hope the machinist union gets the same clue - really, is WN going to be hiring thousands upon thousands of 747/757/767/777 mechanics anytime soon? Or any other US carrier? Probably not. Drastic pay cuts and uprooting families is never easy. The alternative right now is even worse.

I'd have to hop into that Hummer H2 and get a couple of US Abrahms tanks to escort us. That would be if I was even thinking about going into Baghdad.

As an addition a friend in SEA just told me her daughter was placed on furlough as a pilot from a United Express carrier. They are not getting anymore routes from UA at this time so can not get financing for more jets.

When I read the article today on NYTimes about the pilot concessions, I believe it stated that Starfish would be operating Airbus equipment. I was surprised as I thought UA was going to recycle those ex-Shuttle 737's.

I for one would be happy if Airbus became the single-aisle plane for UA. More comfortable, quieter, and nicer amenities (IFE, etc).

As Jana noted, the 733s and 735s are older planes with some of the higher lease payments. In addition, the WNs of the world are buying Next-Generation 737s (73G/738/739), so there is little market for them, I imagine.

With Starfish taking over longer and more business-centric routes, UA needs to keep Economy Plus-configured 737s to keep business and elite travellers, so I imagine the first 737s kicked to the curb will be the ex-Shuttle planes (can I get a hallelujah?) and then mainline 733s, followed by 735s.

While nobody wants their vehicle damaged- my point was that the newer model (still under warranty) would be an easier concession than the late model, non-fuel efficient, un-warrantied piece of transportation that it is.

Airbus aircraft are still under warranty for UA- the majority of them anyway. If Starfish, Starkist or whatever we're calling the LCC becomes a reality, trust that it will be EXCLUSIVELY A320 and A319 aircraft.

With one of the bright yellow paint jobs? The Iraqi soldiers would be so busy laughing, you'd be just fine.

The only problem with Airbus is their lack of F seats. I know other airlines (US, NW) have 4 rows of F seats instead of 3. None the less, I would gladly fly an A320 over a 757 in E+.

An A320 has 12 F seats.

An A319 / 737 has 8 F seats.

So, at worse, Starfish moving to Airbus means you will have either the same, or 50% more, F seats.

757s, which have 24, will remain in service on those routes that can justify them, I imagine. And we may even see more of them, as flights are reduced. Why run two decently-loaded A319s when you can run one fully-loaded 757?
