Lets NOT Eat! Catering problems (cockroaches) on flight leaving DEN
Ugh! After the recent set of issues with LSG in Denver, I'm dissapointed to be the bearer of a bad experience today.
I was upgraded (natch!) on UA 339 (757 tail N550UA) from DEN - SEA today,17 Feb 2010. Upon boarding, the Captain informed those of us in first that there wouldn't be any hot meal service due to a catering issue. The purser and FAs offered any of the snack boxes and/or ala carte options at no cost. I was very pleased at the crew stepping up to address the situation - kudos and GTEMs.
I was chatting later with one of the FAs, who was clear that the catering was rejected by the crew because of the large number of cockroaches in the catering carts. The crew went so far as to get beverage service items (plastic cups, beverages, ice, etc.) from the economy carts, and only opened up bottles of wine from the up-front carts after each bottle had been cleaned with a sanitizing wipe. The crew chose not to place anything on the galley shelves - noting that those shelves were not clean when the crew had boarded.
The crew recommended that the up-front galley be fumigated before being used for any kind of food service. I did not observe any insects (besides gate lice during boarding ).
To be clear, the flight crew and cabin crew made the right call and did everything they could to address the situation.

I'm now officially on the position that LSG in DEN should be shut down and have their license revoked.
PLEASE forward this to the health department and UA....

I from now on refuse to eat food catered out of DEN after hearing of this YET AGAIN until UA changes its DEN catering.

Wow... I mean
Where's the outrage!? I'd almost forgotten about the "too numerous to count" (TNTC) roaches where they clean and pack the carts! Guess they're still around.
I feel like I've read enough lengthy flyertalk discussions about a bit of withered lettuce or a moldy blueberry that we'd be a little more concerned about this.

Very good suggestion, which I have taken you up on lately. In fact, this trend appears to be growing throughout the network; last Friday I was one of at least four people in F to order a snack box and this was *inbound* to DEN.
UA: What does this say about your domestic F product? No wonder you came up with the whole UDU concept! Let's just be perfectly honest and call it E++ at best right now, eh?

It very well could have been catered at DEN, though, if the aircraft did a quick turn back.

Anybody know if this vendor's contract scope extends beyond UA catering @ DEN? Always been a big fan of Pour La France but I wouldn't touch another meal there as long as I live if they too have anything to do with these cretins...

I would presume that multiple airlines use LSG as a catering supplier unless otherwise specified.
A quick look at job offerings finds LSG DEN offering three key jobs recently; director of operations, nutrition compliance specialist and executive chef.
What a horrible position for the FA's/crew to be in, having to explain insect infestations in the catering supplies to passengers. Hope UA fixes this soon. Looks like Gate Gourmet doesn't have a facility in DEN. Any other options for catering there?

Wow - that is incredible. Kudos to the crew for doing the right thing. Hopefully the crew took some cell phone photos to document the critters. In addition to writing to United and the FDA, the local news may be interested in doing a story on this. This would have the effect of kick starting United management into doing something about it now.

This is shameful. #1 on time and #1 in roaches.*
