Ok guys, thank you so much for this info! And yes, maybe I just have to 'embrace' the mobile lounges as this is an unique airport experience

I've read all the facts and statements on this subject- but I have a question that kinda is sililar to this topic- IAD vs EWR IA to D w/ checked bag - plus this will be my 1st time visit to either Polaris IAD and Polaris EWR for me.

Aug 2024 Arriving Mad to Ewr connecting to Den final destination- Business class/1st class- United . However, due to schedule change, I am allowed to opt for Mad to IAD to Den UA Polaris/ 1st class IAD- Den . Connection time in EWR with schedule change is 5 hours and if I opt for IAD, connection time will be 3 hrs.

I will have a checked bag but I also have clear, GE and tsa pre if it matters and I just would like suggestions as to do you prefer to connect and clear customs in EWR with bags or IAD. I have a 5 hour connection in EWR and would shorten it to 3 if I went through IAD. And, is the Poliris lounge in IAD better than the EWR lounge?

Thanks a million in advance and have a great time flying the friendly skies!

What really matters (to me) is the three hour vs five hour connection time. If you can take the shorter time through IAD, that's what I'd go for. Sure, there are some minor differences in everything else but nothing significant compared to the time savings.

IAD 1000 times out of 1000. EWR is an airport I prefer to avoid whenever possible.

You clear the immigration at IAD midfield. The Polaris lounge is a short walk after you clear the security. Also, the PL dinning room is a "secret" place and you normally do not need to wait for a table. So, IAD is a much better choice unless you want to lounge hopping for all UCs in EWR with a five hours layover.
Happy travels.

So, back in AMS after a weekend IAD

Arrived with UA947 (from AMS) somewhere at the start of C-gates, one of the first ones at least. Already at the gate pax were split in connections and local arrivals. The 'infamous' Mobile Lounges were already waiting for us. I have to be honest, once the Mobile Lounge was full, it departed and the ride was just like 5 minutes to the Main Terminal Building.

The Mobile Lounges are pretty packed with up to 100 people, and while waiting at the gate diesel fumes start to pile up in the car.

I was really not looking forward for immigration, but I was extremely lucky, since the AMS-flight was the first international arriving flight and I was literally the first person to pass immigration. Woop woop!

On Easter Sunday I flew back on UA946 with a 18:00hrs departure. The last mile arriving at IAD at 16:00 by Uber was quite busy. I think because of the Easter weekend. The terminal itself was not that crowded. Only carry on, so straigt to the normal TSA checks. Also there: I was in line for maybe one minute. Could believe it. Took the Aerotrain to C-terminal (so much better than the Mobile Lounges) and walked around a bit in C and D-terminal. Then settled down in the Polaris lounge, which was just occupied with about 50 pax. The Polaris lounge is really really amazing!

Unfortunately, we had to deplane after 45 minutes since there was a technical issue with the cargo door. Took some time to fix, but I was lucky to wait in the Polaris lounge again. Then after close to 3 hours we eventually pushed back. All good in the end.

So guys, thanks again for your answers last week, and I am aware that I was lucky with all the queues! DC itself was great. Also love the iconic Main Terminal building. The C and D-gates not so much. Not really a good first impression for the capital airport.

While neither in DC, I would consider Reagan (DCA) more of the capital airport. It even has DC in the airport code and is officially named as Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

Granted, but it's hard for DCA to make much of an impression on passengers arriving from overseas since the only overseas flight it handles is Bermuda.

I'd have hand-luggage only, travel in economy class and no priority for immigration. This would give me 2h 20m to make it (if I miss the flight, I'd rebook for the morning after). If the SAS-flight is on time, is this a doable connection?
So to report back on how this went:
  • 1535 - flight landed
  • 1555 - I started queueing at immigration and used MPC-app lane
  • 1600 - I was through immigration
  • 1605 - Started queueing for security
  • 1620 - Through security and took train to C-terminal
  • 1630 - Arrival at gates in C-terminal
So no problem making the connection although the flight had a slight delay.

343, through clear, pre (with random check) and in lounge
I'm only in the lounge 5 min because food selection is underwhelming
353, people mover departs (after accidentally going down to the train)
358, arrive at D
406, arrive at PL
411, eating first course

So for me I guess that is the minimum time of I want to go to that lounge. I lucked out arriving at C2 but made some errors with the people mover and GE

Tried this again today.
Flight arrived C2
2:57, first one off the flight and find a pretty full moon buggy
3:03 min buggy leaves, GE app works this time
3:08 arrive at main terminal, now there's an app line
3:13 heading to clear, no line in pre but too lazy to pull out ID, oh another "random check", oh well
3:18 in C1 lounge
3:40 moon buggy leaves for D
3:52 at lounge

It was super crowded in the lounge and airport for don't reason. Usually the dining room is half empty, this is the first time I waited (only 2 min). There was only a two top available and I offered to the the guy behind me share.

I still have no i idea where the escalator is to go up to pre. I remember where the elevator is though

Why did you take the mobile lounge to the IAB instead of clearing customs midfield?

This is referring to after coming out of customs/immigration in the main terminal (IAB)?

If so the escalator up is straight and to your left a bit - following the mobs of people going our towards the exits and passing by all the folks waiting for their family members to come out. Once you get to the main "hallway" on the baggage claim level the escalators are straight ahead and you can't miss them.

https://www.flydulles.com/travel-inf...-terminal-maps

International arrivals exit near claim 15, turn right and the escalators up to departure level and security are across from arrival door 2 shown on the map.

For those that might be confused by the recent IAB references, and wondering if it is a typo. At IAD. IAB that means "International Arrival Building"

I've never been sure if it is faster to go through mid-field customs, then take the train over or to get a ride straight over to the main terminal and go through customs there. In general, I usually find the mobile lounge to be faster than the train because I'm a fast walker.
I suppose I can try the other way next time (if I try this again)

Ah I see. Not sure it is faster than the elevator. I'll look for it next time.
