If it was an Airbus, the pilot was correct. Channel 9 left that fleet (A319/A320) when the overhead monitors were removed and PDE installed. So if the pilot has been on the 'Bus for a long time, it could very well be a true statement.

I asked the FA on MUC-IAD (UA 107) yesterday operated by sUA 772 and she replied "oh no, that was taken off aircraft years ago, right after the merger" didn't seem like a smart move to challenge her...nor tell her it was operational on the flight over

Is it just me or does channel 9 seem to be proactively available more on the sUA 752s operating the transcons than on the other aircraft that offer it? Sure, most of the other planes are flying over oceans, but I've noticed the 757 captains as a whole are really into this more than other captains I've flown with. Captain Denny ethos?
Update: Yes, I know these folks can and sometimes do fly 767s as well, but my understanding is that there's a cadre of line holders from the JFK days who always bid these transcon 757 routes.

TPE-SFO on a 777-300,
Asked a FA to ask the captain about ch 9. He comes back and shakes my hand saying he'd be glad to. Said plane is brand new though so he's not sure if it works, but that there was a switch in the cockpit and to let him know at the end of the flight. Then goes on to make a cabin announcement about it.
In seat entertainment system has a "from the flight deck" option. Tried multiple seats.
Sadly, no audio. Oh well.

9/14 UA 340 IAD-SFO 777-200: Channel 9 On: ^
First time getting to listen to it in over three years...too many widebodies. I'd forgotten how great it was.

My DEN HNL flight UA 328 8/29 and my HNL IAH flight UA 252 9/1 had it on. In both cases I saw the Capt or FO as I was boarding and asked. They were cool to do it, but never mentioned it during their announcements.
Approach into HNL was really interesting.

First time in years! Sept 30 UA 946 IAD-AMS 767-300 (N653UA): Channel 9 available and announced by captain:
There was, however, a persistent high tone noise that drowned out most of the audio so I only listened for a few minutes. Also, I was in seat 21D where I had to put away the entertainment system during takeoff and landing.
I did thank the captain after landing for putting the channel on.
