If you see a long upgrade standby list (excluding non-rev, they also appear on a separate standby list) and there are very few first class seats remaining, your chance for upgrade would be probably slim. If you decline for upgrade, your record with partner will not be split after check-in.

Right. The only way to get upgraded at the gate is to split your reservation, so the screen will ask you if you'd like to waitlist for an upgrade. If you do not want to be split, you have to decline that option, which means you'll never go onto the visible upgrade list, and you'll be removed from the hidden upgrade list that they process prior to the gate. That's why I recommend checking in at the airport for flights where you haven't been upgraded and don't want to split.

Is split recommended for RPU?
 
Two of us flying IAH-BOS this week on an early morning flight. Partner is 1K and I’m Silver.

We applied RPUs at booking and at T-96 J has 6 open.

Is it best to split the PNR now to give us best chance of upgrade or could both seats clear upgrade before checkin?

We always split at check-in anyway but don’t want to risk being passed over for upgrade between now and then if space opens up.

Is your preference to sit together or get one upgrade at any cost? Makes a difference on splitting strategy.

We would prefer to sit together obviously, but since we would split at checkin anyway, it’s not essential.

Im just curious as to whether we could be being passed over for upgrade in the time leading up to checkin (since we haven’t yet split) if multiple individual spots get opened up

If UA opens PZ one space at a time, yes, you will be skipped.

You don't have a choice with an instrument applied. You will be auto-split.

ok - does starting the flight change process for just one traveler still initiate the split, or will we have to call 1K line?

Not sure what you mean by flight change? Do you mean check-in? If yes, then the answer to your question is yes.

By viewing the reservation before check in and clicking 'change flights', and pursuing that to at least searching for flights (no need to complete), you should be able to effect the split.

Sorry if this has been asked many times before, but I just wanted to clarify, and be sure.

If myself + companion are on 1 PNR (I'm Gold), we both have an opportunity for CPU to clear starting at T-48?

If we are not upgraded automatically and I decide to OLCI at T-24, the PNR will be automatically split, and I will be the only one that remains on UG list?
If so, I should request my companion be added back to the UG list at airport?

I'm in a situation where I'd rather split the PNR and have 1 of us upgraded to F and one in E+, than try for 2 in F.

What would be the best way for me to proceed?

Check in as normal. It will split and you will.both be on the ug list. You will have issues with baggage and your companion will not be automatically on the upgrade list on the return but both are manually fixed.

mY recent experience has been that when you're autosplit your companion will retain your status for return - i.e., companion will still inherit your privileges on return and be on UG list automatically.

Hi all - sorry, my first experience with this.

I'm Silver, looks like there's quite a few (8) open FC seats on our domestic flight tomorrow morning. My companion has no status and no KTN/TSA Pre. In the past I just haven't split the reservation since we had no chance at FC and she gets TSA Pre each time since I have a KTN. Does anyone know if she'll still get TSA Pre if I split the reservation at check-in to get us both on the UG list?
