Note that you can also gate check a collapsible wagon. Handy when the kids are big enough to be out of the stroller but still too small to make the 1 mile or so walk from door to gate at airports like IAD. Ours holds the kid plus a carryon and backpacks.
I've started to see a lot of wagons and its peaked my interest as well. Thanks for posting that. I have two toddler boys and travel w/ the fam is definitely a different experience than solo.

OP - at least out of SNA, you'll have no issue with the stroller- half the plane will be kids
