UA 767-300 N641UA structural damage after hard landing (has returned to service)

Looks like United is unexpectedly going to be short another 767. N641UA sustained a hard landing last night at IAH, and likely to be written off due to structural damage and cost of repair exceeding the economic value of a 32-year-old 763. Inspections will confirm later this week.

Somewhat reminiscent of the 757 at EWR in 2019 that bounced on landing and had to be scrapped on site.

Was there a storm which caused the hard landing?

Looks like it was on a domestic leg (EWR-IAH) route as well. From what I can tell, N641UA is the oldest 763 in the fleet - it has a good run. UA’s new Dreamliners and A321XLRs cannot come soon enough. As much as I love flying on the 763, it always feels like an operational roll of the dice given how ancient these birds are.

Well that's a likely unfortunate ending to that 763. 32 years of operation is a very long time. Will miss the 767s from economy passenger perspective.

given UA’s busy summer schedule and the tardy Dreamliner deliveries, how will this impact UA’s operations?

Highly doubt it was related to any meteorological phenomenon.

The United 789s do not seem to be doing so well when it comes to reliability (cancellations and mechanical delays)

Simon has also posted the photo at AV Herald - not sure where he got it.

UA 767-300 N641UA structural damage after hard landing

Ouch. Sounds like one less 767 in the fleet. Will be interested to see if they choose to repair this one.

Edit: Seems N641UA has a lengthy rap sheet of significant issues in the past. Most recently an engine fire in March. Might be best to say goodbye to this one!

Ugh…I hope this doesn’t result in the 763 being pulled from SFO-HNL. I like my PE seats at a economy price

From what I understand, the repair for this kind of damage can easily exceed $20m... suffice to say that is well in excess of its current economic value. Boeing engineers will confirm this week but good chance this one is going to the torch.

Got six months with the final Polaris/PP config for the 763. That didn’t pay off.

Interesting - I wonder if insurance pays anything or just becomes a write-off

It may depend on the outcome of the NTSB investigation.
