UA 2034 IAH-SFO diverted to SJC

SFO making normal IFR approaches at the time. If they missed, why not go around? Anyone know the backstory?

Well, yes, but no one missed before or after. So, again, why not go around rather than the considerable expense of the diversion? They must have been darn low on gas.

That's not the only diversion. Some examples (not a full list)

UA5594 PSC-SFO went to SJC
UA2611 LAX-SFO went to SJC
UA5909 MTJ-SFO went to SJC

AA3203 LAX-SFO went to SJC

BA287 LHR-SFO (an A380) went to OAK

Probably didn't have the gas to hang out and keep trying.

Isn't 20/20 hindsight wonderful? Unfortunately, United doesn't have a crystal ball, so they had to make decisions based on forecast weather at the time.

Some kind of traffic management program in place at SFO that has flights diverted to other airports in the region. A BA flight to SFO was directed to OAK and from OAK it will take off back too.

Would UA let you deplane in such a situation or do they make you stay onboard for an hour or two and then fly to sfo?

Judging by the Flightaware track, they never attempted an approach at SFO.

They were put into holding well east of the Bay then diverted to SJC. That would be consistent with not having enough holding fuel to stay in the hold until their turn to fly the approach into SFO.

Generally, no. Especially for shorter diversions.

Would have to go to a gate and open the door, that triggers all sort of things. Plus you have the issues of those with checked bags and trying to explain why a potential carry-on only is allowed to leave.

Has this done, yes. I was on a SFO-ATL flight that diverted to BNA and a couple of BNA residents did get off but it was a longer diversion

Unless I'm mistaken, isn't SFO right in the flight path they took (circled in red in this image). And they definitely had a missed approach somewhere, based on that altitude data.

On a previous diversion to SJC we were not permitted to deplane as UA only flies ERJs and smaller to that airport. We were on a B737 or A320 and either the UA jet bridges could not accommodate, or more likely, were not contracted to handle larger aircraft.
