For future scenarios; hand up, call again. And post the scenario on FlyerTalk before moving forward with a resolution, not after. . And the flight isn't for months so the situation will be repeated multiple times prior to the flight.

euslaner, glad you got the refund. However, in order for us to figure out what really happened so that the next person gets better feedback from the forum, what really happened? The $3,000 or so you were charged over and above what you originally paid could not have been a change fee, it is not possible. As findark guesses, it was likely an incorrectly calculated "fare difference" and if the agent on the phone used the words "change fee" that agent would need to be retrained. Is what findark is guessing what really happened? Thank you for the information.

What receipts or confirmation records do you have, and what items do they list?

My point is, I don't think that we will ever know why; we just don't have enough information to figure it out.
