Are you a Double Earth Looper or a Polar Explorer?
Information on This Thread: As I have done for a few years now, I thought it would be fun, even in this crazy pandemic year, to put up and rank the numbers for United BIS (Butt In Seat) or "actual" flight miles*. Beginning this year, United no longer has any loyalty measures remotely related to miles flown. Their PQP (Premier Qualifying Points) measure is all about fare dollars and class and their PQF (Premier Qualifying Flights) just keeps track of the number of United flight segments, the same as the old PQS (Premier Qualifying Segments). However, as noted below you, can still determine your flight miles flown.

So again, this thread is strictly for ranking United BIS miles for 2020 which ranks your real flight miles* on United planes. If you also want to list your Star Alliance BIS that is fine as well for fun. If you want to comment on your flying or lack thereof this last year, that is not a problem. I know for me, my last flight for the year was on March 17th coming back on one of the last flights to leave Cape Town, South Africa. Please list your BIS flight miles at the top of the thread so I can rank them.

Of course, this year’s numbers will be likely much reduced from past years, probably less than 25% of previous years for many of us, so I have accordingly reduced my grouping milestones. I would think it is highly unlikely anyone was able to get to the moon and back this year or even just to the moon! Perhaps you were still able to loop the earth or perhaps make it from the North to South Pole?

If you want to rank your Lifetime United BIS miles you can do that at the United Lifetime Flight Miles "BIS" Ranking for the end of 2020 that can be found here: United Lifetime Flight Miles BIS Ranking for the End of 2020

The previous year’s United BIS rankings can be found at:

End of 2019 United BIS Rankings or How Much Did You Really Fly Last Year on United?
End of 2018 United BIS Rankings or How Much Did You Really Fly Last Year on United?
End of 2017 United BIS Rankings or How Much Did You Really Fly Last Year on United?
End of 2016 United BIS Rankings or How Much Did You Really Fly Last Year on United?

After we have a reasonable number of United BIS entries I will provide a ranked list that is divided into levels of flight distance accomplishments (How many times have you circled the globe or a pole to pole flight?).

The best and easiest way to get your United BIS miles number is to take your United Lifetime flight Miles for the end of 2020 (or what you expect it to be) and subtract from it your United Lifetime flight Miles from the end of 2019. This one year difference in Lifetime Flight Miles is your United BIS for 2020.

If for some reason you didn’t record your end of year 2019 lifetime number last year (Doesn’t everyone?), then you can still calculate a close approximation of you United BIS by adding up the flight miles from each flight. Since most of us probably don’t have too many flights this year it shouldn’t take that long to do. There are many flight mile calculators on the web. One that I find easy to use is this one: WebFlyer Mileage Calculator. Just enter the two cities (or airport codes) for the departing and arriving locations and it will give you the flight segment miles.

Finally, if you don’t have your 2019 lifetime miles, are mathematically challenged, or don’t have all day to calculate your BIS, please feel free to approximate your BIS. Just put a “~” in front of the number to designate an approximation and I will also be happy to rank it.

Let the posting begin…

(*Note that the United Lifetime flight miles are a bit of an approximation to your actual flight miles since United rounds up all small flights less than 500 miles to 500 miles even. Thus, United slightly overestimates your mileage depending at least on the number of short flights you have taken. United also does not keep track of or give lifetime mileage credit for any award flights. To keep this simple, let’s just use United’s definition of flight miles.)

7812 BIS. My lowest total by at least 50,000 miles since the merger. Only reason it's that high is UA has offered the best pandemic schedule SFO-PHX.

Subtracting my self reported 2019 lifetime BIS from my own calculated 2020 lifetime BIS total, I get: 20,280 19,868 BIS.

However, using UA's YOY data, they have me at: 19,868 BIS for 2020. Huh?

Whatever. Fixed - bad data for IAH-BWI flight. Went with gcmap.com's value and UA's and my totals now match.

UA BIS in 2020 = Zero

Still stuck between 975-980k lifetime.

But I thankfully keep 1K and hope fervently I can use it in 2021

Wait. Only 12 respondents so far and there are 1 who voted in the thread's poll who flew over 250K, 2 people who are indicating that they flew over 500K and 1 who flew over 1MM:

And with 12 respondents, 25 votes in the poll? Huh?

Maybe some mistook for a lifetime poll? Is that one of those votes from Tom?

I just saw the poll. I placed a vote for 25K-50K on my UA flights this year (2020).
