Were it not for PE, it's unlikely that UA would have a hub at EWR. Shortly after the acquisition, CO did raise fares, but not by crazy amounts in most cases.

There appears to be a little thread drift, but if you accept the fact that PE went on to become part of UA many years later, I think including them in this discussion is fare game. EWR was a nasty airport back then, and they didn't include "New York" in the name, but apparently CO saw potential in it.
