How often are there equipment changes?

I’m sure this is a difficult one to answer, but in general how far ahead does the schedule get readjusted. I have several Ps flights, and one just switched from the 787-10 to the 757, so quite a different experience. It seems end of Dec there’s only one 787-10 flight between EWR and LAX?

I track changes on flights I take. On flights up and down the west coast—SFO/LAX mainly—the maximum number of swaps I’ve seen is 6 in three days. TPAC is more stable, but I’ve seen it happen 3 times—once is much more common. For LAX or SFO to EWR, one or two times. A switch from a B78X to a B752 is more annoying than common. It happens, but not as frequently as swapping B737s around. Almost every trip I’ve taken has had at least one leg swapped; well over 95% of the time, it’s like-for-like. For example, I’m flying back from HKG now on ship 2136: a B773. Yesterday, it was going to be ship 2137, another B773. Hang in there, it could switch back.

There are a lot of schedule adjustments around T-3 months (give or take a month). Prior to that the schedules (number of daily flights is typically close +/- 1, but timing is approximate) and equipment (often using a single type to cover all of a family) are really just notional.

I don’t think swapping assigned tails a couple of days before the flight counts as an equipment change, at least not in this context.
