SYD-LAX-SYD New Polaris

Hi,

I am trying to find out if / when the new all-aisle Polaris Business is coming to the SYD-LAX-SYD route? Can anyone assist?

Thanks,

Marcus.

Presently that route is flown by 787-9 which appear to be late in the retrofit plans -- 2020?

Wine is correct. The 787-9 was the last fleet to arrive with non-Polaris seats. It only makes sense that they would be the last to get the new seats and this is what the plan appears to be. It's a real shame because these have the longest range of any of UA's fleet and they are used for the longest routes.

From what I last read, the plan was to start the 787s in Q4 of 2019. I take that as the first aircraft can enter MOD on 31DEC19. UA's goal is to have all MODS complete by the end of 2020, but I think that's wishful thinking and suspect Q2-Q3 of 2021 is more realistic.

Thanks for information.

I wonder why Sydney did not get 787-10?

787-10 does not have the flight range, no go for USA-Australia (SYD/MEL)
787-9 has 1,400 mile longer flight range

So Delta is now flying their new J to Australia: https://news.delta.com/delta-launche...stralia-and-us

Wonder if this will accelerate UA's plans w.r.t. Polaris on the 787-9?

I, for one, doubt that there will be any change to United's Polaris deployment schedule for the 787 because of DL's new seating.

I think you're more likely to see a 772 or 77W with the new Polaris seats as a one-off aircraft sub before a retrofitted 789 is deployed on US-Australia.

It's odd that AKL is getting the new Polaris regularly, now gets Premium Plus, but the presumably higher yield Australian ports get the old seats.

UA doesn't fly 77Ws from LAX. And UA needs for operational reasons to be consistent with aircraft type to SYD, so both LAX and SFO utilize the 789.

And I'm not sure AKL isn't equivalent yielding. There is no real competition on that route (just JV partner NZ). I understand J fares are very consistently $8k plus. By contrast, you have DL, QF, and VA all competing into SYD.

I think many of us felt that was a surprising aircraft assignment when first announced, but UA has stuck with it, which suggests it's working for them.

SFO-AKL runs about 5.5K for J and you get the new Polaris.

It really depends on when you want to go. SYD is not particularly expensive in July, either.
