My money's on CLE-CGO. Been asking for this one for a while.

Not gonna happen. Lots of routes being suggested that are not within the scope of existing fleet. The only one that might be possible (and this is purely speculation) might be ORD-SYD, if any of the extra 14 789s UA has on order come in a low-density, J-heavy configuration. Even then, I think it might still be too far.

I don't think the 787-9 can make that run - too far

Impossible. UA doesn't have the equipment.

ETA: apparently it's a common misconception, but for the record, the 787-10 has less range than the -9. The -9 is the range king of UA's fleet, likely followed by the 777-300ER.

It’s 8:30 Eastern time the day of announcement and it hasn’t been leaked yet! Good job UA!

I would bet the JNB first and BKK second!

I'd guess this is related to the Nov 30 2018 Avianca/Copa announcement. But like all others on FT, SFO-BKK please

Maybe it's a new episode of "Safety is Global" coming to a seatback near you on January 1.

Interesting...LAX getting some love after being stripped of SIN earlier this year?

Who knows. Around the time the transfer of LAXSIN to SFO #2 was announced, there were strong rumors of a new LAX longhaul coming down the pike. I would have expected an earlier announcement for something in EU for S19, so this timing would be suggestive of a long-lead W19/20 start, say late October 2019. If LAX, I would think that means APAC given some (recovering) softness in Latin America and weakness in Brazil/Argentina.

It also makes a lot of sense for a 10/2019 launch of JNB... (I suspect EWR but could very well be IAH/IAD).

I can’t see any new Latin America routes given current weakness (even if I’d like EWR-SCL). As for JNB - do folks think that is most likely? Could a winter seasonal EWR-CPT work instead?

ORD-SYD is beyond the 789s range. It's over 9200 miles.

I doubt we will see additional ORD routes.

Except the annoucement talks about "routes"?

Maybe they're signing up with Musk and the new route will be co-branded Polaris and go to the moon. I have a couple current and former UA officials I'd like to book on that as a one-way trip.
