I have seen J on other SFO-XXX int'l flights overbooked by a seat... SIN was doing that last year... and seen it on SYD too. SFO typically sees a lot of missed connections onto int'l, so the statisticians feel it's worth it to sell an extra seat, and worst case scenario, UA has to cough up a $1500 voucher to downgrade someone back to Y or Premium Plus.

Hi, I'm curious what my chances are for two GPU upgrades as a 1K on UA 837 SFO -> NRT on 3/10? Currently 43/60 booked, with the following fare classes:

J9 JN9 C9 D9 Z9 ZN9 P9 PN2 PZ0 IN0 I0 Y9 YN9 B9 M9 E9 U9 H9 HN9 Q9 V9 W9 S9 T9 L9 K8 G3 N9 XN9 X1

It switched from PN0 to PN2 this morning. Thanks!

Hi! I'm curious the chances for GPU upgrade (as GS) on UA 838 from NRT to SFO.

Currently booking status:
J9 JN9 C9 D9 Z9 ZN9 P9 PN0 PZ0 IN0 I0 Y9 YN9 B9 M9 E9 U9 H9 HN9 Q9 V9 W9 S5 T0 L0 K0 G0 N9 XN0 X0

Looks like there are plenty of J class seats available, would these be sold normally on this flight? Thanks!

Hard to say without knowing when you’re flying... if it’s in the coming days, P availability suggests your chances could be good... if it’s weeks or months out, it’s harder to predict.

Date would help lol
If you waitlisted now, I'd say your chance of upgrade is extremely high. P9 will normally clear GS waitlisted after a few days (IME)

Should be excellent odds as a GS.

Upgrade chance?

UA 64 from EWR to LIS on 6/28 (Friday redeye). Gold status, waitlisted Miles Upgrade with a +1, showing 8/39 booked, J9 JN9 C9 D9 Z9 ZN9 P0 PN0 PZ0.

Guessing this means they think the seats will sell, especially given that it's a Friday flight. Not expecting anything and have 28 AB selected, but would be great to arrive in Portugal a bit more refreshed!

It's way too early to tell. Upgrades are going to be difficult on a Friday, especially during the summer, but I don't think EWR-LIS is a huge business travel route, so there's still a chance. Z9 ZN9 P0 isn't actually terrible inventory for you; terrible would be J9 JN9 C9 D0. It's good news that they're selling some discount inventory.

I have hnl-ewr on Saturday 5/18 and iad-hnl on Sunday 6/9 both waitlisted using RPUs as a platinum. Any chance at all either way?

Maybe some small chance on IAD-HNL. Not EWR.

My RPU just cleared on 873 (GUM NRT) on 3/11 with zero seats showing as open (I think 1A and B are blocked) and J1 JN1 C1 D1 Z1 P1 PN1 PZ0 IN0 I0. I checked earlier today and it was 2s across except PN1 and PZ0. Why would they clear an upgrade six days out when J is all but full? (My RPU NRT GUM flight on 3/7 cleared at ticketing a couple weeks ago and now again it's J1 JN1 C1 D1 Z1 P1 PN1 PZ0 IN0 I0 (I think they were mostly 4s at the time). I guess they expect next to zero last-minute business fare sales?

My only guess would be because NRT-GUM and v.v. is a leisure route for Japanese tourists, and I suspect there is not a big market for full fare J seats on those flights.....

Don't forget 1A and 1B on the 777-200 are blocked and will open up approximately 48 hours prior to departure if you're looking for a better seat.

Yes, there are some routes where inventory control is basically programmed with the assumption that nobody will ever buy the premium cabin.
