Editorial: prior to booking I called a (very helpful) MP agent who found me the available space - I'm originating at RDU so I'm able to connect wherever gives me the best change to upgrade, which obviously helps...

My stomach was turning about this one not clearing and it ended up being pretty easy. It got as low as 2 open seats. By then end, there were about 10 upgrades and I was the second one cleared off the list the day of. Naturally my p.s. leg never cleared.

But perhaps this is all theoretical and doesn't really count? See, this flight was preceded by a LAX-EWR leg. Although we arrived at EWR about 10 minutes late but in plenty of time for me to make the connection, ground traffic control kept us on the tarmac so long that my EWR-FRA connection left before we could de-plane. I wound up getting re-routed through LHR on a 752 in an exit row. (I continued on via BA to FCO. Can I still call MP and request original routing credit?) Teaches me to ever book a connection with anything less than a two-hour layover (note: I am returning via EWR with a 70-minute layover in March ... gotta look into fixing that).

At least UA got me to FCO on the originally planned arrival day.

Had originally booked this for Jan 27 and waitlisted for upgrade with my last GPU of 2017. Due to schedule change by UA a month prior, I changed date of flight from Jan 27 to Feb 2 (by which time the GPU would normally have just expired, as would my 1K status) and waitlisted again with fingers crossed.
Cleared 48 hours out.
