It is the desire of the FT UA Moderation Team to keep this thread open, as there is still much to be learned. While realizing this incident has some elements that have led to some very active discussion; such as the Congresswoman is local to a major UA hub and familiar to many UA flyers, FT has certain rules for discussion. This forum is focused on travel with UA and there are better places for other types of discussion.
After some discussion among the FT UA Moderators, we wish to clarify what is appropriate and what is not.
Not appropriate and better elsewhere
And all the standard FT rules apply including not commenting on other posters and not posting unnecessarily inflammatory, inciting or provocative comments.
Generally, if you are not discussing the incident, good chance you may be Off Topic.

Houston intercontinental Airport is in her Congressional District. She has plenty of ties to the local politicos. And, considering her well-deserved reputation as one who can hold a grudge, her position as ranking member of the House Subcommittee on Transportation Security could cause UA plenty of trouble down the road. If the Dems flip the House in November, she'll be chair of one of the subcommittees overseeing the airline industry.

LOL. Did you expect me to link to Cruz's MileagePlus account?
One flight in E+ wouldn't have gotten Cruz on the UA upgrade list.
Indeed. Enquiring minds would like to know.
This is silly. Anything SJL can do to or for United, Ted Poe and especially Ted Cruz can do many times over. And there's nothing about that subcommittee that's specific to UA or Houston. By that logic, every airline should be gifting top-level status to SJL, whether she flies them or not.
No one has argued "she has no power." The argument is that she's vastly less powerful than Ted Poe or Ted Cruz, which is inarguably true.
