Routing Advice BKK / Southeast Asia to/from USA for UA flyers

Hey guys.. I am new to the upgrade game on United... Is there a way to tell if there is any flight that will clear immediately on the United site. I think the "R" status is for regional.. but it changed? what is the code for international..'

Also I have a 2 month window to travel april or may... I willing to leave from any domestic airport... What do you think my odds are of getting a Business class upgrade to Bangkok,??

advice would be great!

"R" upgrade / fare class is missing! (replaced by PZ)

UA does not fly to BKK, you would need to use a partner to get there on the final segment and only AHA/NH will honor UA GPUs (on very expensive fares) and it would require a separate GPU just for the NH segment and a separate for the UA segments. On UA you need PZ space (R is no longer used for upgrades)

Since United doesn't fly to Bangkok, I'd say the odds are low, unless you fly with another carrier like LH or NH and try to use your GPU on their metal.

Problem with using GPUs on NH and LH is they are segment by segment, so you'd need 2 in each direction. Your best way if you want a single GPU in each direction would be UA to SIN then on to BKK from there in economy. Having said that, good luck finding PZ to SIN in advance. It's a tough one.

See this thread: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unit...ua-flyers.html

IMO, the best option is to route on a separate ticket via TPE, HKG, or SIN. But there are other options as well.

I'd say that the problem with using GPUs on NH is they can only be used on extremely expensive fares. Might as well just buy business class at those prices.

You can't book the SIN connection on a single UA ticket (except perhaps with the final segment in full Y or B, and again you've now got a fare that's so expensive you've mooted the whole point of using a GPU).

PZ for GPU upgrade. Search from the UA gateway hub, don't include domestic connections, it will mess up the search results.

You can not "search" for PZ. You can see if present by using Expert Mode or using the Advance Search function for upgrades. As mentioned best to search for upgrade space a segment at a time, starting with the overwater segment

For more, see Ways to search for upgrade space at booking?

Yeah, fair point on the connections, I wasn't aware that UA is only allowing NH connections for BKK on lower fares, for some other places in Asia they allow HKG connections with all sorts of off-Alliance carriers. That's kind of an inconvenience for GPU users, since NRT-BKK would be coach and that's not exactly a short flight.

As a UA Silver, what type of upgrade are you trying to get? Whose GPUs are you going to try and use? Or are you using miles + copay instead?

IMO your best bet is to look for availability via NRT. I don’t think you will need to look too hard to find PZ availability if you are flexible on both date and US gateway

I'd avoid NRT for an upgraded routing. 7 hours in coach from NRT to BKK would vitiate the benefit of the upgrade to/from NRT, imho
