The United reservation page looked 100% normal and exactly as it did for my Feb flight -- there was a confirmed business segment and a waitlisted first segment. I'm not as familiar with the ANA website, but I don't recall seeing any issues.

I had United do the flight number exchange - reservation looks normal on UA site, and the PP waitlisted just fine with the new ticket number. However on ANA's site I see both NH 8 and the original codeshare UA 7950. I'm hoping that this is just a confusing UI on ANA, and the old unticketed codeshare segment will drop off after 2 weeks (the deadline to issue tickets). Also interesting is that I had to go into ANA's site to manually remove my seat reservation for UA 7950 so I could reselect the seat on NH 8.
Does this line up with others' experiences? |

Next time check the reservation on the ANA App once you make any changes with UA. If status does not say ticketed then you will have a problem. When you go back to UA they will tell you it is fine and problem is with ANA, but that of course is not true and you have to insist and get UA to reissue ticket.

Do you mean it should say “Status OK”?

If your upgrade was unsuccessful did you get the waitlist cancellation email right at T-24? Currently at T-10 the waitlist for DEL-HND still seems to be intact on United’s end.
my flight went from J2 C0… to J7…..P1 at T-24, and right now we are at T-10 and still no upgrade waitlist cancellation email. Online check-in did check us in economy still and the reservation stopped showing the waitlisted segment and went from “upgrade waitlisted” status to “ok”. Are we still on some airport waitlist or is this end of the line? Thanks! |

I have had an upgrade carry all the way to the airport and then clear, so it can happen. Be prepared to ask/argue a bit at the check-in counter - they are sometimes confused with UA-sponsored upgrades. Good luck.

DEL-HND: Upgrade did NOT clear
Data Point:
At the check-in counter in Delhi, they had absolutely no record of our upgrade request. Even though on United, I could still see it was there and a 1K agent could also still see that the upgrade request was there. ANA could not see any record of it at all. They even called Tokyo office and they couldn’t tell either. This most likely confirms that even if United does not confirm it, ANA wipes all plus point upgrade requests at 24 hours these days and United will eventually return your points to you and you might have to expedite to get them back faster. this is especially disappointing, considering my flight went doors closed at J7. Guess I’m gonna be calling United to get my plusPoints back 😂. |

UA transforms PlusPoints waitlist segment into a WLPA/PB/PC/PD SSR within 1-2 days of departure. Any PlusPoints/MUA applied within the timeframe will see a temporary PA-PD segment and then quickly squished into an SSR. |
Upgrade strategy using PlusPoints on NH
Currently booked in R on UA 7938 (NH 11) ORD-NRT on April 2. No status on NH, 1K on UA. I know I have to call UA to have the flight number changed, and I need to upfare to A for $650 before I can request an upgrade to J.
Does the fare differential seem small/large/normal? Since the $650 wouldn’t be refundable, what’s the instinct on this board regarding my chances of clearing? Inventory currently reads J9 C9 D9 Z9 P9 O9 A9 R9 Y9 B9 M9 U9 H9 Q9 V9 W9 S9 L0 K0. Any merit to sitting tight as I have read NH may email days before departure and solicit upgrade bids? Anything else I should be aware of? |

1K probably buys you nothing in terms of prioritization on ANA’s waitlist. And ANA will let seats go out empty to discourage the expectation of upgrades. During peak cherry blossom season, I’m thinking ANA might be stingy. |
(another) weird story re PP upgrade on NH
Hi all, thanks for the detailed posts and helpful replies here - I trawled through the thread and couldn't find anything analogous to my situation so here goes...I have a true NH flight and applied a PP via the UA site a few weeks ago to upgrade from J to F -- a few days ago the reservation changed to show (I think) confirmed segments in business and first - including confirmed seats in both cabins. I have NEVER had confirmed seats/segments in multiple cabins on the same flight without something getting canceled. I called UA and they said it looks fine. I called NH's awards desk and they said it looks fine and told me the upgrade had cleared and gave me a seat assignment in F. FWIW the ticket was booked by a corporate travel agency and *their* site also shows both J and F segments in the reservation. Below is a screenshot from an email I got from NH late yesterday.... What are my odds of getting a)a cancelled flight and b)a no-drama check-in experience this week? Thanks and Happy New Year!

Thank you! Called the TA and they were absolutely confounded by this, said I should call NH. I'll try again Monday...
