This is likely due to availability restrictions imposed by AA -- no airline CRS will show/allow booking more than 9 passengers without going through the airline's groups desk, many airlines will max out availability less than that (6 is a common number IIRC) for what they show as availability to other airlines, even if the flight is wide open.

I once used the ITA Userscript to book an entire DL itinerary on united.com. 016 ticket so I received 2X on the purchase amount with the Chase card. It was no more money than booking directly with DL and I still earned SkyPesos.
Sadly, the Userscript stopped working with the Hipmunk engine and you can no longer link over to united.com for booking. While it lasted it was absolutely the best way to book because you could force fare classes per segment, among other things.
More recently I was looking at flights around Asia with Google Flights. A surprising number of flights can be booked through United as long as you include a UA segment. (But always confirm it's a good price before booking.)
