Parsing Fare Basis Code

I am examining fare rules which I retrieved from United as a "flexible fare" and am in particular trying to figure how a partially used ticket is treated for a refund/change.

Based on the googling I've done and read, within the Fare basis code having an N code is one indicator that it's not refundable. I don't see this, which is good, but I'm not finding anything that would indicate what would happen on a partially used ticket. Will they refund the difference minus the 190 euro? What should I be keying off of in these rules?

You have to actually read the fare rules the basis code doesn't usually tell you enough to be sure what the fare gets you.

I'll assume the fare text is almost identical for VHWRCIAW on the outbound portion and VHXRCIAW on the return portion.

These rules tell you that you can cancel your ticket (or even no-show and cancel afterward) and get back the entire price you paid for your ticket to your original form of payment, minus a 190 cancellation fee. (This is what United typically means by a "refundable" ticket, that you can voluntarily get some of the price you paid back to your original form of payment.)

These rules also tell you that you can change your ticket to any other United-issued ticket at any time for a 130 fee.

So the ticket is refundable (less a 190 fee) and changeable (less a 130 fee). If the fare rules are different on one of VHXRCIAW or VHWRCIAW then the 'worse' ones apply to the whole trip.

If you decide to cancel refund this ticket after it has been partially used, fore example you fly the outbound MIL-DEN and then decide you want to refund the DEN-MIL sector, then UA will compute the historical fare price of a one-way trip MIL-DEN. If this is cheaper than what you paid, you'll get a refund (minus 190 fee). If the new price is higher, UA may choose to ask you for more money (you should call them).

Thanks mherdeg! Your assessment is what I was optimistically assuming, but wanted to confirm this.

Incidentally is there anyway a mere human can see what the historical price is of a one-way flight on any leg, or do the airlines keep that info locked up?

Also on the fare text difference between VHWRCIAW and VHXRCIAW, I did a compare and the following is the only difference within the two excepting randomly added parentheses as well as one other line about voluntary refunds.

I'm assuming that you are attempting to buy a roundtrip ticket with the intention of using only the outbound, and then requesting for a refund minus the €190 fee. The chance of getting any residual value back from this strategy is small. IMO your best bet is to hope for a cancellation or significant schedule change, in which cases you might be able to request for a full refund of the value of the return portion without fee.

The "historical" oneway fare is the lowest published oneway fare on the day the ticket was issued and applicable to your original itinerary. So, if you are still planning to buy this ticket, you can figure out the "historical" fare simply by making a dummy oneway booking. Otherwise, past published fares can be pulled up by anyone with access to a CRS--it's publicly available, but not readily accessible to us mortals.

Maybe, I'm not sure about the the return flight, which is why I'm looking at a flexible fare. I thought it was interesting to try and figure it.

It has made me curious about analyzing the historical one-way fare price and price modeling for things like this. I found this paper on Dynamic Airline Pricing and Seat Availability and realized more of what the airlines are doing, but the analysis is domestic and doesn't include anything but non-stop flights and excludes the effects of changeable tickets. Change fees, cancellations, are something I consider for many of my flights.

Do you or mherdeg have any idea what technique they use for the historical fare price one-way. Straight mean, mode, median, and over what period? Or is it just a dummy booking one-way on non-holiday mid-week day?
