United Airlines Service to Havana Starts November 29

CHICAGO, Sept. 1, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The countdown to Cuba is officially underway at United Airlines after the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) awarded the company final approval to launch service to Havana from two of its hubs this fall. Beginning Nov. 29, United will start daily nonstop flights to the Cuban capital from New York/Newark and Saturday nonstop service from Houston with both services subject to government approval. Since the DOT announced its preliminary Havana route awards in July, United has been working closely with the Cuban government to prepare for the start of its operation into José Martí International Airport.

They didn't actually announce that.. their press release talked about charter flights...just like UA's did. No US airline has approval yet for any regularly scheduled Cuba flights.

The United States and Cuba have agreed to allow 110 round-trip flights on U.S. airlines to Cuba per day, according to Thomas Engle, deputy assistant secretary for transportation affairs at the U.S. State Department. That includes 20 flights to Havana and 10 to each of the other nine international airports in Cuba.
He said no date has been set for final signing of the aviation agreement, but no issues were expected to stop it.

I don't know much about Cuba, but am surprised they have 10 international airports. Seems like a lot for an island of their size, but I guess many are fairly small operations...but 10 arrivals daily from the USA for each?

A LOT of European airlines fly a lot of planes to Cuba, including some high density birds.
WN has no widebodies, and suspect big three won't have any to spare, so they may be doing some quick turns. And Spirit loves to fly many places once a day, so by the time you add JetBlue, Frontier, maybe Allegent ....

Cubana is state owned, and there are Billions and Billions in judgements against the Cuban government stemming from court cases over property seized after the revolution. Any Cubana plane that landed in the US would be immediately impounded and seized via a writ of attachment. The same would apply to any payments that they might receive that would pass through US financial institutions.
The reason that it is just US airlines is that Cubana can't fly to the US until there is a treaty that addresses/for closes claims against the Cuban Government so that Cuban property is not seized.

I'm surprised 1 weekly. I would've thought IAH or ORD could've been 3 weekly.
Looking at other airlines proposals, UA has the least amount of flights. Hopefully UA is not missing out here. IAH should've gone daily. I'm quite surprised it's not. 1 weekly from IAH is very uncompetitive.
