Because my company requires me to buy non-refundable tickets and I frequently have to change my plans. It is still a LOT cheaper. I flew around 150 segments last year and the average difference in price between non-refundable and refundable ticket was $300.
I just wish United would count it toward GS - that probably would have made ad difference for me.

$75 for a SDC before I made Gold, but that was covered by one of the two credit cards I have that each give me $200 in credit for incidental costs on United (Amex Plat and WF Propel), so might be $0 depending on how you look at it.

Just US$200 in 2014, though that was going into a situation with a family emergency knowing I'd have to change the outbound. Money well spent.
Other than that, zero for the rest of the changes because they were all SDC.

$0 Lifetime.
I don't understand why anyone is concerned about having change fees count towards PQD. They have no inherent benefit. If you travel that much that you have a lot of change fees, it shouldn't be a problem having enough PQD's for your PQM miles level. My PQD's this year were way over my elite level. If you don't spend that much money, you don't deserve to be in the same elite level as I qualify for, since over 95% (100% in 2014) of my air travel is personal pleasure travel and money out of my own pocket. PQD's are the one change UA has made to MP that I agree with.
Once I wanted to change departure cities from Cedar Rapids to Des Moines because of lost luggage. My luggage was supposedly sent to Des Moines (after I had 10 days with no luggage) because the delivery service in Cedar Rapids did not go to the city where I was staying, and I wanted to retrieve it. I figured I was doing a favor for UA. They wouldn't have had to worry about getting my bag to my home city and paying a delivery service to take it to my home. It took a lot of pleading and asking for several different supervisors before they finally changed my ticket for no change fee.
