GPU redeposit denied on split one-way segment
Hi folks,
I recently flew ANC-ORD-EWR. When I applied a GPU for upgrade I specifically requested that the ORD-EWR segment be left out, as I didn't want to waste the upgrade for the short flight. I've done this many times and this was confirmed on my screen. ANC-ORD showed upgrade requested. ORD-EWR showed CPU eligible.
So ANC-ORD upgrade did not clear. ORD-EWR did clear. Now they are refusing to redeposit my GPU as they are saying I used it on the ORD-EWR segment. Further, I was instructed that it is not possible to apply a GPU (or RPU) to only one segment of a trip...but I've done this many times.
Any advice?

GPU redeposit denied on split one-way segment
Yes I called. They have no way of seeing the old reservation and told me the upgrade applied to the whole one way trip. Again, they said it was impossible to split up a one way trip when applying a GPU/RPU. Very, very frustrating.

HUACA - applying to a long leg and not a short one is something that is quite common. Let the agent know you're an experienced 1K who has done this many times before, and would NEVER use the GPU on the short leg if you couldn't clear the long one in advance.

Did you use it? I understand that you told them not to apply it to that segment. But if you boarded the plane and took the upgrade, you used it. Under the circumstances I think you should have informed the GA as soon as you saw the upgrade on your boarding pass. Otherwise, you accepted the upgrade and consumed it.

He really only "used" it if the priority from the GPU on that segment was enough to get him from no upgrade to an upgrade.
Even then, he didn't intend to use it. I would HUACA. Be polite though so you don't get notes.

I have noticed that when the system transfers at t-24 screwy stuff happens with upgrades. It would not surprise me if it got messed up and the GPU was applied to that flight at that time even though online it said CPU requested.
I agree with others that Screenshots go a long way.

OP: based on what you say, you clearly deserve to get the GPU back. Even if it did get "used" on the short leg, it should not have been used, and therefore it's not your fault that it was.
With that in mind, your challenge is to get through to somebody who understands the situation (and, in particular, is not under the impression that you could not have done what you did in fact do when you applied it only to one leg!), and who has the power to fix it.
1. Try MPSC as suggested above.
2. Try emailing 1KVoice.
3. Send a polite PM to UA Insider here on FT. (I haven't done this in a year or so, and I think they've gotten less involved, but if you can get their attention, they know from the start that you're not an idiot).
