Our goal is to offer a world-class experience at our LAX hub, and to that end we will be investing $450 million over the next several years to modernize our facilities and enhance the experience for our customers. Some changes have already occurred, including reconfiguration of multiple gates in Terminal 8 to handle additional narrow-body mainline aircraft. We will begin further improvements later this year, and by the end of 2017 we plan to open:
  • A brand-new check-in lobby and Premier check-in area
  • A dedicated Global Services Reception with direct security lane access
  • A reconfigured and expanded security checkpoint
  • A refurbished baggage claim area
  • Renovated gate-area hold rooms
  • A brand-new United Club with sweeping views and new amenities
To prepare for these changes, we will consolidate our operations into Terminals 7 and 8 over the next few weeks. Here’s what you need to know if you’re traveling to, from or through LAX:

Beginning September 24, 2014, the following changes will occur in the check-in lobby:
  • The Premier Lobby in Terminal 6 will close, and a temporary Premier lobby with Global Services check-in area will be available in Terminal 7
  • Global Services members will be invited to enter LAX curbside through Terminal 7
  • Dedicated Global Services security lanes will also remain available
Beginning October 27, 2014, the following changes will occur in our operations:
  • United will no longer use gates located in Terminal 6 (gates 60, 61, 62, and 63)
  • The United Club in Terminal 6 will close
  • The current United Club in Terminal 7 will continue to be available
  • The current United Global First Lounge in Terminal 7 will convert to a United Club
  • All departing flights and most arriving flights will be consolidated into Terminals 7 & 8
  • Please note: Some international arrivals may use the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT). These include flights from Sydney and Melbourne, and some flights from Mexico on a seasonal basis.
Thanks for your patience during this transition, and we appreciate your “pardoning our dust” as we work to improve our facilities at LAX.

Security Checkpoint Setup

During this early stage of the construction, there remain four entry points for United passengers to get through security:

T6 Checkpoint: Although UA will soon cease service out of T6, T6 is connected to T7/C8 by a secured hallway, and the T6 security checkpoint remains a quiet checkpoint with full PreCheck.

T7 West Checkpoint (a/k/a T6.5 West a/k/a T6.4): This is now for general economy passengers only. There is no PreCheck and no Premier lane here now.
The passageway to T7 remains open (guarded from the T7 side by very mean redcoats) and is now clogged with general economy passengers who check in in T7 and must schlep through the hallway to the West-facing checkpoint.
T7 East Checkpoint (a/k/a T6.5 East a/k/a T6.6): This is PreCheck only, with a single line feeding to two TSOs, two x-ray machines, and two WTMDs. This is a probable significant improvement over the prior T6.4 Checkpoint PreCheck setup.

C8 Lower Level Checkpoint: Premier security is now at C8. No real PreCheck at this checkpoint.

T7/T8 to TBIT via tunnel, about 40 min walk with average speed (copied mostly from a blog; http://upgrd.com/blogs/doublewidesfl...-security.html ):

If you are flying through Los Angeles and are connecting airlines, just follow the signs that are located near the far southern end of each terminal to connect via underground tunnel to the other terminals.

When in TBIT, walk past the KE/one world lounge to the end of concourse - take a right handed u turn, up the escalator and the *A lounge is there.

In terminal 4, access the tunnel via the escalator that reads gate 44A-L
Continue to follow the signs to baggage claim, walk past the waiting room is for the bus to Terminal 6 or the American Eagle remote terminal.

to access the tunnels from Delta terminal in T5, the escalator leading to the tunnels is near the entrance to the Sky club near.

The access point from Terminal 6 is near Alaska Airlines' gates, across from the Alaska Airline Board Room and near the Ruby's diner. The tunnel ends at terminal 6, so you must exit the tunnel and access terminal 7 & 8 by above ground walkways which are near the terminal exit and security screening center.

That seems quite unlikely considering that T7 has 55% more gates than T8 (14 to 9). Can they even park a widebody at T8?

It seems LHR and SYD are the only GF routes at LAX. This is even less than some spoke cities like PEK, so don't hold your breath.

Also, the fact that UA CFO didn't mention GFL as a difference between GF and BF services is not good news for GFLs.

T8 only has one side of seating and already is packed in the mornings. I really can't see all UA out T7 and T8 and losing a gate in T7 , especially long term and LAX still being a hub.

Someone mentioned a terminal swap and AA should take T7 and T8 with the commuter terminal being much closer for the bus ride. Move UA closer to TBIT. Something to ponder.

Is there that many GF passengers to warrant premium space in a consolidated terminal for UA? How crowded was this lounge? Been there a million times and hardly saw a soul go in or out.

More downgrades for LAX travelers! United used to be the premier airline in LAX for years. Now there won't even be a GF lounge anymore. The new "United" has downgraded flights to 2 class 787s, used 737s to Hawaii to replace much more comfortable 767s, cut routes, and decreased premium services in LAX. United is hardly what it used to be in LAX just a few years ago. It is interesting how it was able to maintain a large west coast presence for years until after the merger.

When I used to fly United internationally from LAX, back when they went to LHR, HKG, NRT, SYD, even AKL, the First Lounge was one of the reasons to use LAX. So the United "what the hell do we care what customers want" tour continues, with even their "spokesman" not able to address this simple question.

Kacee,
years ago i recall boarding the JFK flights from the end of T8. agree T8 is extremely cramped even on a good day with no delays

Read between the lines. The gates in T6, which they are abandoning, CAN handle wide body jets. No new gates at T7 to do that, and no gates at T8 can handle wide bodies. So, that means LAX is being downsized, in more ways than one. Loss of lounges, loss of international services now confirmed as permanent, everything crammed into T7 and that horror T8... what else are they "enhancing"?

will T6 and T7 still be connected airside?
if not, no more as lounge when flying UA. one less reason to fly ua.

Of course they will still be connected airside - why would they not be? The plan is for the tunnel between 4 and 5 to open so all of the south side terminals will be connected airside.

One way they could not be is if the TSA ( ) security checkpoint moved closer to the gates, at the end of T7. And given how much that would inconvenience customers, I certainly see UA leading the effort to do just that.

Arrival time. If it arrives early morning (6:30/6:50am) then it'll be TBIT. If it arrives later in the day, it'll be T7.

So basically that means all SYD-LAX will be TBIT post October, and all MEL-LAX will be TBIT except for Saturday when it leaves/arrives a few hours later.

UA has very few early morning international arrivals - sending these flights to TBIT allows them to avoid opening the CBP hall in T7 hours earlier than otherwise needed.

I think they are thinking of the GF lounges more as Global Services rather than 3 cabin first lounges.

Question is do enough Global Services customers value it there. The soon to be old location is out of the way and a hassle to reach, the opposite of what a GS wants.

There are enough for there to be a dedicated global services checkin in the new plan, which didn't exist before.

LAX IS getting downgraded but people still can't or don't want to believe it.

In 2 years when only hub flights exists, those same defenders will say, no need for a hub when they got SFO. This marketing twists continues. LAX will still have plenty of flights. (to real hubs). I wouldn't be suprised if Hawaii flights went away.

SYD will probably downsize to a 787.

We will be flying thru SFO from Sydney from now on.
OT from the thread topic. If you are a US citizen, I encourage you to apply for Global Entry. We are thru TBIT in 5 minutes since we rarely check baggage.

I think the upgrades to LAX terminals 7 and 8 are badly needed for UA. They were falling behind AA and DL on upgrades at LAX. Hopefully there isn't too much disruption for the next few years but maybe worth flying into SNA or ONT during that timeframe.

Interesting that there is no mention of replacing the GF Lounge but then again they are looking to fly the 787s out of LAX and that aircraft doesn't have the GF. Plus, with over-entitled Rainey all but admitting that GF is gone we shouldn't be surprised.
