Way more thought than necessary.

Check in or don't. Accompany family to gate or not. But, don't bother to cancel. It's all figured into UA's load and inventory management. If OP doesn't board, his seat goes to a standby.

Ooh, good point. I suggest waiting until close to departure to cancel, too, because there's the chance of a delay (which could result in a refund), and of course then your F seat is almost guaranteed to go to someone on the waitlist instead of a TOD.

Why not SDC (same day change) after entering the UC and gate area? If it is needed, do another SDC later. Happy travels.

I say wait until the last moment, go to the gate and see what happens.

If nothing changes and you want to be nice, just let them know that you will not be boarding.

If they ask why, just say "Something suddenly came up".

Don't do it. See them off before TSA.
For a person who checks-in and no-shows? No. Happens all the time, standby will get the seat, or the plane will just leave with the empty seat.

For a person who checks-in, boards, and then gets off the plane without telling anyone? OK, now we're talking. (Yes, this happened to me on a UA flight recently.)

Turns out it was cheaper and easier for them to just buy me a new one way ticket for the following day. There is no value back to me if I cancel my original ticket

What I would like to do is check in and accompany them to the gate and the united club and see them off but just not show up for the flight. Would there be any repercussions? I was actually planning on letting them know at the UC once we get there. Since my upgrades have already cleared someone at the top of the UG list will get a happy battlefield upgrade I guess (my wife is pissed because had I flow I would have sat back in coach with the kids and should would have taken my F seat...well that's not the only reason she is pissed about this last minute change).

I know I can get a gate pass with a UC membership but it just seems easier to use a BP (plus I can get PRE).
Can't you try and do SDC?

My company already bought me a replacement one way ticket (they are also covering any other expenses caused by delaying my vacation...except for wife appeasement related expenses).

That is possible but the only goal in OP's case would be to SDC for different flights over several days or longer to see if one of the flights goes MX and then get a refund. OP - it could be a consideration.

I have tried that before and was able to SDC for several flights over 48 hours, then no more SDC's were available to me without an add collect, so the value of the ticket was lost (<$200). Never send good $ after bad...
